On Tuesday, April 29, the Cloud County Community College choir groups will present their third annual Cabaret Concert. The concert will begin in Cook Theatre at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
This year’s concert theme is music from film and television. It will feature the Community Chorale/Cloud Concert Choir, the Cloud 9 Jazz Choir, solos and duets performed by students and community members, and a special guest performer: Denise Blehm, principal violinist for the Salina Symphony.
Blehm has been a featured soloist and violinist with the symphony for over 25 years, and principal violinist, also known as the concertmaster, for the last 20 seasons.
The Community Chorale/Concert Choir is a non-auditioned, community vocal ensemble that is open to singers from the college and the community. Some of the songs they will perform include “Unchained Melody” from the 1990 film “Ghost” and “As Time Goes By” from the 1942 film “Casablanca.” They will also perform choral selections from the 1993 film “Schindler’s List” and “Sanctus” from Requiem. Blehm will be featured on the violin for both selections.
The Junction City Community Choir will also perform with the choir on two selections.
The Cloud 9 Jazz Choir is an elite, auditioned group consisting of only nine singers. They perform standard blues, jazz, and other popular music selections. The Jazz Choir will perform several selections, including “Almost Like Being in Love” from several films, including “Groundhog Day,” “Over the Rainbow” from the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz,” and the “James Bond Theme.”
The choirs are under the direction of Christopher Langsford, instructor in music at Cloud County Community College. He can be reached at chris.langsford@cloud.edu with any questions.
