“But now, GOD’s Message, the God who made you in the first place, Jacob, the One who got you started, Israel: ‘Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine. When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end—Because I am GOD, your personal God, the Holy of Israel, your savior.” Isaiah 43:1-3a The Message
I am a huge fan of “The Chosen” series. The main reason for this is the episodes are so well done and they have opened me up to a better understanding of life in the days of Jesus and before. These verses open the series with a very young Mary Magdalene being comforted by her father. He is repeating these verses of the Hebrew bible as words of comfort for his little girl. These words are words for us to always remember as well, especially as another new year is beginning.
Sometimes new beginnings come from something else ending and new beginnings can be frightening. These verses tell us that God always provides us with his unwavering presence and protection. Assuring us that even when we are facing uncertainty in our lives we are not alone because he walks with us on our journey.
Mary Magdalene’s journey was not a pleasant one and when Jesus says these words to her himself, towards the end of episode one of the first season, she immediately remembers them from her younger days. Once again remembering that God has already taken action to save and deliver her which gave her a sense of security.
When we read “I have called you by name” what we should hear is that God has intimate knowledge of each one of us individually. We have a personal relationship in which he knows us deeply and cares for us specifically. Let us remember as this new year begins, no matter the challenges that we may encounter God promises to be present and guide us through them. Even in the most extreme difficulties we can count on his presence.
As this part of our journey together comes to a close remember what these words say. That God knows each of us intimately and he calls us each by name. Protecting us through whatever might come our way. God promises to be our guide and we must trust in his strength to carry us through.
Now may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard and keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as you journey this month.
Happy Journeys to you all.
