City of Concordia February Manager's Minute

Posted

Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, and he was right! The snow continues to fall as I write this February edition of the Manager’s Minute. We continue our theme of “Loving Our Community.” Valentine’s Day is Friday, and I am sure many of you have purchased a special gift or planned a special dinner with your valentine. However you choose to celebrate with your loved ones, I hope they know how much you care about them.

There are many different ways to show others you care, to show love. One way is by serving others. Concordia has many different opportunities to serve others within our community as well as outside the border of our city. Perhaps you participated in the Chamber of Commerce effort to provide valentines for our area nursing home residents, or you helped our local churches pack meal kits last weekend.

The City of Concordia uses several advisory boards to support and provide recommendations to the City Commission on a variety of topics that affect the quality of life in Concordia. The Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Board of Building Trades discuss regulations and necessary changes to more effectively govern the built environment of the city. The Housing Authority makes decisions related to maintenance and housing conditions at Cloud Village. The Recreation Advisory Board discusses and recommends programming changes, and provides support to the Parks & Recreation Department. The Airport Advisory Board recommends changes and improvements to make Blosser Municipal Airport function better for pilots and businesses operating at the airport. Many community members serving on these boards have a passion for and some expertise related to these areas they bring to the table. If you are interested in learning more or serving on any of these boards, please visit the City website www.concordiaks.org.

Concordia is also home to several civic clubs, including Rotary, Lions, Optimist, and Kiwanis. These civic clubs each have their own mission and special interest projects to maintain their focus. Yet they all share the similar purpose of making our local and regional community a better place. These clubs meet regularly for fellowship, usually sharing a meal together, and to discuss their service projects for the year and how they will raise the funds to complete those projects. If you are interested in meeting new people and serving your community in an active way, please consider joining one of our local civic clubs. If you need help connecting with these clubs, please contact City Hall and we will assist you.

Loving and serving our community go hand in hand. It’s easy to love your community while you are serving, making a positive impact on others. And if you love your community, you desire to serve others, to share your joy forward. We love our community with gratitude for those who came before us, who also chose to love our community, serving in ways that made it better for us.
