County Farm Bureau Agent Wilson Thomas said that he had been unable to find any signs of the greenbug menace to wheat and oat crops in Cloud County, and expressed an opinion that “if the greenbug is making inroads in this area, he’s probably as unhappy as anyone else about the high winds and dust we’ve been having the past few days”… Vernon Martin of Martin’s drug store observed his 25th anniversary in business in the same location, and gave pencils and sherbet to his customers all day in honor of this event… ten thousand trees from the State Forest nursery at Hays were distributed to 30 Cloud County farmers for shelterbelt and windbreak plantings… vocal entrants from the high school for the district music meet were selected by judging— Girls, high voice: Theo Ferguson, Martha Peterson and Constance Wilcox; Girls, medium voice: Phyllis Hormel, Elaine Gile, Shirley Taylor. A track was completed and brought to grade and work already was underway on one of the barns at the old POW camp where Concordia was to have a horse racing track complete with a grandstand and barns to house 200 horses… Carl Peck of Concordia, first year student at Kansas University Medical Center, had been named group leader to Germany for the 1965 summer program of “Experimenting International Living”… the Reverend and Mrs. M. O. Wheaton of Wichita had been hired to be administrators of Sunset Home, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Rev. and Mrs. R. H. Spangler… men leaving Concordia for pre-induction physical examinations for the armed forces were James Mendenhall, Rodney Nelson, Dennis Wright, Robert Brooks, and Thomas Cunningham… Notre Dame students who entered the Music Festival at Concordia public school included the girls chorus, mixed chorus, vocal ensembles and band, and these solos: Beverly Fleming, clarinet; Richard Gagnon, trombone; Maurene Richard, alto saxophone; Karla Stangel and Sheryl Fleming, piano; Linda Bombardier, Susan Kennedy, Gayla Mayfield and Cameron Marcotte, vocal… winners at the Martin Drug open house were Dale Busby, automatic electric blanket; Andrew Tankersly, coffee percolator; Mrs. Clarence Taylor, walnut carving set; Mrs. Marjorie Ashby, Lawrence Johnson, and Mrs. Alvina Crawford, boxes of candy…
