75 Years Ago—1950

According to a telegraph sent to Jack Shrouf, his son Don, who had been held in Shanghai with more than a hundred other U.S. diplomats and consul members, would be able to leave for home… after the completion of his new home on West Eight Street, D. W. Hull, local contractor, opened his house so the public could view the project…  new pep club officers elected for the next year at Concordia high school were Neva Davis, president; Joanne Kutz, vice-president; Glenda Cook, secretary; Bonnie Price, treasurer…  Country Club members were asked to bring their own paintbrushes for a “painting party”—15 gallons of paint had been donated to paint the exterior of the clubhouse…  Karl Kramer would once again direct the Summer Playground program; Arthur Mastin was assistant director, supervisor of the Garfield playground and men’s softball program; Susan Meador, Lincoln school playground and girls’ softball activities; Jackie Christie and Joy Kutz, instruction in arts and crafts at all three playgrounds; Treva Johnson and Diane Alexander,  city park area taking care of younger girls and boys… thirty-five patients, representing twenty-two towns in two states, were admitted to the new St. Joseph hospital in one day—in case there was anyone in the surrounding territory who was doubting the need of the new facility… there were fourteen pens of lambs at the lamb show and first prize went to Harold Walker, Miltonvale, for a 4-H entry; second prize to Glenn Chartier, Ames; third, Velvie Mann, Simpson; fourth, S. W. Winteroth, Concordia; firth, Harold Vernon, Simpson… Ed Lasnier of Concordia had taken the dealership for the Dwell-Ettes pre-fabricated homes…

60 Years Ago--1965

Floyd Johnson announced his purchase of the Conoco Service station at Sixth and Cedar from John Whitney who had owned the station for 25 years… Gary Owen, Concordia, had been promoted to rank of cadet captain in the Air Force ROTC Cadet Wing at Kansas State university…  Miss Eileen Puett and Steve Slater were both awarded scholarships that were offered to music students by the Concordia Music club… Bob Cousins was the 1967 class representative on the student council at Kansas Wesleyan university, Salina… cheerleaders elected at the Concordia high school were Cynthia Perry, Brenda Swiercinsky, Barbara Hobbie, Gini Larson, Kay Minard, Mary Owensby, Terry Bohling, Jane Arnold and Deeanna Perry…  Lorraine Johnson, Concordia, and Sarah Anderson, Jamestown, piano students of Miss Olive Ritter, received a first rating and gold medals in the Biennial Piano Recording Competitions sponsored by the National Guild of Piano Teachers… Camp Fire Girls of Group 20 gave a Fly-Up ceremony for the Bluebirds of Group 25. Bluebirds flying up were Maxine Balthazor, Cynthia Geisler, Susie Gennette, Diana Grandpre, Lori McDaniel, Denice Muths, Tina Paris and Mary Ann Tallent… all Moose members were asked to bring hoes, rakes, lawn mowers and cleanup tools to the Moose ball park for the spring cleanup…  Randy Trost, Linda Revell, Bonnie Trost, Mickey Trost, Marsha Doyen, Dale Revell, Ronnie LeDuc, Larry Trost, Julie Chubbuck, Deanna Johnson, Patty LeDuc and Regina Revell, students of Huscher school, Dist. 57, toured several business places in Concordia, including the Blade-Empire plant…

50 Years Ago—1975

Concordia High School drama department completed a successful year, receiving a I rating for “The Marriage Proposal” ay the State Speech and Drama Festival in Manhattan. The cast, Debbie Goff, Bruce Dyson, Steven O’Connor and assistant director, Tammy Bemis, all received gold medals for their achievements… making it three in a row, John Harris, senior at CHS, won a Merit Scholarship as did his brother Del, and his sister Susan…  Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Tuggle were the parents of a daughter, Courtney Anne, born April 17…  out of the 52 schools in the 3A, 4A and 5A classes at the state tournament, the judges gave the Concordia forensics squad more I ratings than any other school. Squad members were Rhonda Bohm, Bruce Dyson, John Harris, Paul Jaster, Jo Kahn, Alan Maish, Steve O’Connor, Kim Pettygrove, Susan Pitzer, David Predmore, Mara Rasure and Sylvia Workman… Betty Humes had been chosen as the new mayor of Concordia… Boy Scout Troop 34 celebrated the 25th anniversary of the chartering of the troop…  Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hyde were the parents of a daughter, Rebecca Sue, born April 14… members of the CHS golf team, Dana Bramwell, Tom Pearson, Jay Lowell, Andy Carrier and John Lagemann, won the Ellsworth Invitational…  Paula Jean LeBlanc became the bride of Paul Gregory Tatum in a ceremony held April 12 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph… Concordia was represented at the National Office Education Association conference in Chicago by Kris Winter, who won first alternate to General Clerical II series and Information Communication II series at the state convention… winners of prizes at the “Uptown in The Country” fashion show were Mrs. James Rittel and Mrs. Clayton Guiot… Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Haist had chosen the name Erin Lynn for their new daughter… winners in the Hospital Auxiliary Benefit Bowl were Joyce Tholstrup, first place; Vivian Crump, second; Anita Nelson, third… CHS graduate Mark Breault won the pole vault in the T-Bird Invitational with a 12-6 vault… Cheryl Jo Higgins was a winner in the ALCO fishing contest with a 12 pound channel cat… an eight ounce package of Chubs sandwich spread was 59 cents at Boogaart’s…             

25 Years Ago—2020

The Cloud County Community College team won the junior award at the national agriculture contest sponsored by the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture at Crookston, Minnesota… Christy Hasch, Brad Lowell, Alice Boschek, Jack Kaufman and Peg Loveland were honored and received awards at the 2000 Kansas National Education Association (KNEA) USD 114 Location Association Recognition Dinner at the Swedish Crown Restaurant in Lindsborg… Concordia High School senior Spencer Farha, a 5-10 point guard on the Panther basketball team, played for the Central Kansas High School All-Star team against the University of Kansas Barnstorming team… Thad Lambert had opened a new NAPA Auto Parts store at 214 West Sixth Street… Jeff and Jennifer Koch, Clyde, announced the birth of their son, Bradley Herman, born April 18…  Carlee Baumann, Bianca Fischer, Haley Bowers, Karley Buer and Mallory Backstrom, Level 3 competitors from the Concordia Gymnastics Center, claimed the team title in the AAU State Gymnastics Meet… James and Angie Joyner, Jamestown, announced the birth of their son, Corey Lee, born March 31… fifth grade students in Kevin Steinert’s class at Concordia Middle School put on a play about the environment… 

10 Years Ago—2015

Students in Starla Balthazor’s third grade class became published authors and illustrators when the students created a class book called “Into the Future”… the State Knights of Columbus elected James Bell as the State Knight of the Year for Kansas…  April/May Students of the Month at Concordia Middle School were Hugo Nava, fifth grade, and Mikyna Voss, sixth grade…  eighth-graders Ryan Lee (1,600 meter run), Beau Bonebrake (javelin), and Chance LeDuc (discus), recorded first-place finishes in the Beloit Invitational… Robin Daniels had been selected as the Concordia High School Student of the Month for May… Ashley Jean Brzon and JoDee Rothfuss, both of Concordia, received degrees from Emporia State University… Colton Jones and Max Byron gave a rock concert at the Brown Grand Theatre… 

5 Years Ago—2020

Dr. Abu Hossion, instructor in chemistry at Cloud County Community College, had created a local brand of hand sanitizer in his laboratory on the Concordia campus…Lake Winter, sophomore in microbiology at K-State and graduate of Concordia High School, was a recipient of the 2020 Division of Biology Most Promising Student Award… Jeff and Rhonda Gumm, Concordia, announced the engagement of their daughter, Jordynn, to Korey Welch, son of Dennis and Susie Welch, Haddam…
