75 Years Ago—1950

C. P. “Punch” Rogers of Concordia, an accredited jeweler, and his nephew, Ray Rogers, bought a jewelry store in Longmont, Colorado. Since the owner’s name was also C. P. Rogers, the sign over the store did not need to be changed… “Bo” Smith and “Skeeter” Hiesterman, managers of the Concordia Blue Jeans softball team, took the team to Belleville where the girls scored 25 to Belleville’s 12. Players were Shirley Duehren, Yvonne LeMoine, Johnita Gallagher, Dorothy Chavey, Ina Courville, Jean Gallagher, Nancy Whitney, Donna Walsh and Connie Tracy… Sheriff Jack Cleveland investigated the theft of wheat from the Henry Brunell farm east of Aurora. The thieves carried the wheat from the granary to the road in a scoop and spilled much of it en route, leading Brunell to state that he felt that thieves interested in stealing wheat would devise a better means of loading it… Walter Passmore of Concordia received word that his son, Captain Jack Passmore, a graduate of Concordia high school, and Army surgeon at Sandai, Japan, for the past year, was now a surgeon for an evacuation hospital unit at Pusan, Korea… Virginia Walker gave a surprise birthday party for Wilma Barleen with a line party at the Strand theater and a supper party… Harold Tieking and Robert Appleby were sworn into the U.S. Marine Corps at Kansas City… playground fishermen got firsthand instruction on how to “fly cast” when they journeyed to Daugherty pond where the Rev. D. W. Smith provided instruction and demonstrations… “Annie Get Your Gun,” starring Betty Hutton and Howard Keel, was showing at the Strand, “cooled by refrigeration”…

60 Years Ago—1965

Merger intentions were announced by officers of the Boogaart Supply Company, that a merger into Scrivner-Stevens was contemplated to be effective in December… The Bluethings and the Kitty Wells show were the big show attractions at the Cloud County Fair… Kaye Vaughn, formerly of Concordia and a pro football player for 11 years with a Canadian team, announced he was retiring from the pro gridiron… Mrs. Katherine Wehrbein, 1116 Cedar, was the winner of a nylon rug given away during Patrick’s Home Furnishing second anniversary pow-wow celebration… E. C. Henry, operator of Henry’s Charter Air Service in Concordia, announced he was considering establishing twice-daily air service to Kansas City if enough people in the area want such service. Fare for the flight would be approximately $25 with no charge for the return flight and no limit as to the date of return… one of the Echo satellites was visible over Concordia and people who saw the U. S. satellite said it was very bright and traveled from northwest to northeast through the heavens… there were pleas for help finding more stable facilities in the close proximity of the race track as stable accommodations at Thundercloud Park could not meet the demand for the Grand Opening and it was feared that several horses would have to be turned down… W. A. (Dutch) Edwards grew a 22-inch cucumber at his garden on 13th Street… Bill Folkner was elected commander of Davies-Crook American Legion post…    

50 Years Ago—1975

C. Wilbur Naylor, Soil Conservation, Concordia, was retiring after more than 41 years of federal civil and  military service… Ray Houser, president of Babe Houser Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Inc., announced that construction on its new facility would begin in September…  tryouts were held for the Brown Grand Community Theater’s production of “You Can’t Take It With You”… Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kindel, Aurora, were the parents of a boy, Alan Ernest… Concordia Fair Queen Contest at the Cloud County Fair at Glasco: Susan Link, Glasco; Sherry Nelson, Concordia, first runner-up; Ann Jackson, Jamestown, Fair Queen; Sue Freeborn, Clyde, second runner-up; and Teri Lee Shannon, Miltonvale…  Ron Gates of rural Glasco won the distance portion of the Cloud County Fair tobacco spitting contest… Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Begnoche of Clyde were parents of a boy, Patric Joseph…  queen candidates for the 22nd annual NCK Rodeo were Sandy Letourneau, Carmen Kaufman, Donna Naillieux, all of Concordia, and Marcia Craig, Talmo… Donna Alderson of rural Concordia won the “Make-It-With-Wool” contest at the Cloud County Fair… The Blue Patrol of the North Central Kansas Shrine Club performed during Concordia’s annual Sidewalk Bazaar…   

25 Years Ago—2000

Marvene Gieber had been awarded the Cloud County Community College Support Staff Appreciation Award… Devin Lowell attended Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center… the Baptist Church third and fourth grade girls Sunday School class had a dress-up tea party and paraded their finery for the Sunset Home residents. Amanda Hinman, Kelsey Nachtigal, Skye Balthazor, Katelyn Koerber, Shayla Eakins, Julie Hartsel and Megan Hittle participated… Dusty Hodgins, rural Concordia, was elected vice president of the Kansas Junior Charolais Association for the 2000-2001 year… former Concordia High School pole vaulter and sprinter Natalie Wellendorf signed an NCAA Division 1 track and field letter-of-intent with the University of Nebraska…
