NWS issues heat advisory for northern Kansas Friday and Saturday

Posted

Extreme heat has arrived in northern Kansas this year, with the National Weather Service (NWS) issuing a heat advisory for the entire northern edge of Kansas.

According to NWS forecasters, extreme conditions will begin at noon on Friday, June 20, and continue through 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

The forecasted heat index on Friday and Saturday could reach 106 degrees. The mix of hot temperatures with high humidity can quickly lead to heat-related sicknesses like heat cramps, exhaustion or even heat stroke.

The advisory includes local areas like Cloud, Republic, Washington, Clay, Jewell, Mitchell, Osborne, Ottawa, Smith and Phillips counties. Forecasters predict that Friday night temperatures will only fall into the mid to upper 70s, offering little relief from the extreme conditions.

NWS forecasters suggest residents should prepare for the hot temperatures by taking additional precautions when venturing outdoors.

To reduce the chance for heat-related sickness, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing, limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening and take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and stroke.

In the alert, forecasters stated, “Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.”

According to the NWS, it is unsafe to leave children and pets in unattended vehicles during these conditions, because car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a short amount of time.
