POW Camp News

Posted

The POW Camp Concordia Preservation Society held its monthly meeting on June 9 at the Cloud County Historical Museum Annex. There were seven members present.

The minutes of the last meeting were made available to all members and were accepted as written. Susan Haver gave the treasurer’s report, which was accepted.

Barbara Shunn reported that in April the guard tower had 41 visitors and the museum in T9 had 120. One visitor at the guard tower was from Japan and one at the museum was from Australia. During May the guard tower had 50 visitors and the museum had 203.

Old Business:

  1. The roofing of T9 is a big project and we have not found any roofers willing to tackle it. Therefore, building contractors will be contacted.
  2. A sign has been installed east of Belleville on US 36 directing people to Camp Concordia.
  3. There was discussion about the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the closing of the camp.
  4. Barbara Shunn reported that the statues will be painted and moved into the museum room.
  5. The kiosk will be painted.
  6. There was discussion about repairs to building T64 at the camp entrance. Estimates will be gathered to see if the work can proceed.

New Business:

  1. Victory Day was reviewed. Having a published schedule was good, but the re-enactors need more time. The porta-potty needs to be put in a better location. The lighting and sound system for the speaker was good.
  2. As a result of the traveling Vietnam Wall, 30 people toured the T9 museum.

The next meeting of the POW Cap Concordia Preservation Society will be at 5:30 p.m. on July 14. The meeting will be at the Cloud County Historical Museum Annex, and all members and interested persons are invited.
