Speed safety campaign urges drivers to slow down and remember the consequences

Posted

Chief Brent Gering with the Concordia Police Department is urging drivers to slow down and remember the legal and potentially deadly consequences of not following posted speed limits. Drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement on local roads during a statewide traffic safety campaign, which runs from October 8 through 19th, 2026.

Speeding is not only against the law — it significantly increases the risk of serious crashes and life-changing consequences. Speed is involved in 1 in 5 traffic fatalities in Kansas.

Speeding can:

  • Increase the risk of losing control of a vehicle.
  • Reduce the effectiveness of safety features such as seat belts and airbags.
  • Increase the distance needed to stop after recognizing a hazard.
  • Lead to more severe crashes that are more likely to result in serious injury or death.
  • Result in costly fines, higher insurance premiums, vehicle repairs, medical expenses and lost wages.
  • Increase fuel consumption, leading to higher fuel costs.

Choosing to obey the speed limit helps protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians and everyone who shares the road.
