CHS tennis places third in NCKL meet

Getting top three finishes by its singles players, the Concordia High School tennis team placed third in the North Central Kansas League tournament it hosted last Friday.

Qwinter Thrash placed third in number one singles for the Panthers. Brigham Chavey was third in number two singles.

Concordia scored 12 points in the tournament.

Clay Center captured the team league title with 37 points. Marysville was second with 33.

Thrash opened the tournament with a narrow 8-7 loss to Nick Frese, Marysville. He defeated Landon Barten, Abilene, 8-0 and Ian Wooldridge, Chapman, by default, before falling 8-1 to number one singles champion Brooks Craig, Clay Center, 8-1.

Chavey suffered an 8-0 defeat to Tayven Wilson, Marysville, in the opening round. He slipped past Shelton Holt, Abilene, 8-7 and downed DJ Won, Chapman, 8-3, before losing 8-1 to Cale Tromp, Clay Center.

Joel Gross and Hunter Nielander picked up one win for Concordia in number two doubles. They lost 8-0 to Garett Haverkamp and Kevin Wicks, Marysville, in the opening round, and then downed Charlie Hylton and Cael Casteel, Abilene, 8-5.

Gross and Nielander fell 8-5 to Ethan Hamilton and Laikton Cromer, Chapman, and 8-0 to John Alton and Eli Pfizenmaier, Clay Center.

Evan Bombardier and Zakary Allen played number one singles for Concordia. They lost 8-1 to Titus Wassom and Blake Spicer, Marysville; 8-6 to Carson Hess and Pierce Casteel, Abilene; 8-3 to Jacob Boland and William Strauss, Chapman; and 8-0 to Brooks Craig and Anthony Davies, Clay Center.
