Panthers compete in 4A regional

MCPHERSON — Concordia High School’s two doubles teams picked up one win each in the Class 4A regional tournament hosted by McPherson High School last Friday.

Evan Bombardier and Zakary Allen opened the tournament with a 4-6, 6-4 (9) victory over Jacob Boland and William Strauss, Chapman.

Bombardier and Allen fell to the eventual tournament champions, Bryson Archer and Alex Berger, McPherson, 6-0 6-3.

Lane Eck and Theron Mays, El Dorado, eliminated Bombardier and Allen, 6-4, 6-1.

Eck and Mays went on to place sixth and qualify for the 4A state tournament.

The top six singles players and the top six doubles teams advance to state.

Concordia’s Joel Gross and Hunter Nielander downed Carson Hess and Pierce Casteel, Abilene, 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. They lost 6-0, 6-0 to John Alton and Taige Pfizenmaier, Clay Center, and 6-1, 6-0 to Naman Bhatt and Reece Knight, El Dorado.

Alton and Pfizenmaier would place second and Bhatt and Knight finished fifth.

Concordia scored three team points in the tournament. 

McPherson won the regional title with 23 points. Clay Center was second with 312.

Qwinter Thrash, playing singles for Concordia, received a bye in the first round. He was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by fourth-place finisher Eli Pfizenmaier, Clay Center, and 6-0, 6-2 by fifth-place finisher Ian Wooldridge, Chapman.

Brigham Chavey also played singles for the Panthers. He fell 6-2, 6-0 to Eli Pfizenmaier.
