T-Birds drop two games at Hutchinson

HUTCHINSON — Jayhawk Conference West Division-leading Hutchinson Community College handed the Cloud County Community College baseball team a pair of losses in a doubleheader played last Sunday.

A pair of Hutchinson pitchers combined on a two-hitter to lead the Blue Dragons to a 10-0 victory in game of one.

Hutchinson secured the series win by defeating Cloud County 6-3 in game two.

Cloud County split a pair of one-run games with the 17th-ranked Hutchinson in a twinbill it hosted last Friday.

The T-Birds fell 4-3 in the first game and pulled out a 5-4 victory in the second game.

Trenton Roehler pitched the first five innings to get the win for Hutchinson in game one on Sunday. He gave up one hit, struck out six and walked two.

Ashton Perkins worked one scoreless inning and allowed one hit while striking out one.

Hutchinson scored a single run in the first and fourth innings to go up 2-0.

Five runs in the fifth inning gave the Blue Dragons a 7-0 advantage.

Scoring three runs in the sixth inning, Hutchinson ended the game because of the 10-run rule.

Jack Macintosh allowed seven runs on nine hits, struck out four and walked two in four and a third innings in suffering the loss.

Cloud County got out to a 3-0 lead in game two.

Landon Meyer hit a solo home run for the T-Birds in the first inning.

Cam MaCleod scored on an error in the second inning.

Jakob Poturnak made it 3-0 with a solo home run in the top of the third inning.

Sending 10 batters to the plate, the Blue Dragons put up six runs in the fourth inning to go up 6-3.

Cloud County was shut out over the final six innings.

John Klus took the loss. He surrendered six runs on five hits, struck out three and walked two in four innings.

MaCleod had two hits for the T-Birds.

In the first game of the series played at the Concordia Sports Complex on Friday, Hutchinson scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second to go up 3-0.

Poturnak homered with Noah Konings aboard in the bottom of the second, and Cloud County trailed just 3-2.

A solo home run by Poturnak in the fourth inning tied the game at 3-3.

Neither team scored in the next four innings.

Karl Rabin singled home Blake Bradford in the top of the second extra inning to give Hutchinson a 4-3 lead.

Nolan Freund singled with two out in the bottom of the ninth, but a strikeout ended the game.

John Klus, pitching in relief of Kevin Mannell, took the loss. He gave up one run on two hits and walked one in one inning.

Kevin Mannell worked the first eight innings and allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out eight and didn’t walk any.

Poturnak had three hits in four at bats and drove in three runs.

Hutchinson led 3-0 going into the bottom of the third inning in game two.

Solo home runs by TJ Coats in the third inning and Poturnak in the fifth inning pulled Cloud County within a run, 3-2.

Hutchinson upped the lead to 4-2 with a run in the top of the seventh inning.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Coats singled and Gannon White came in to run.

Justin Johnson followed with a base hit.

A single by Austin Coyle got White home.

Easton Norris, running for Johnson, scored the tying run on a wild pitch.

Demitri Shakotko singled with the bases loaded to drive in Coyle with the winning run.

Zach Sharshel got the win in relief of Coats. He gave up one run-one on one hit, struck out two and walked one in one inning.

Shakotko had three hits in four at bats. 

Coyle and Coats had two hits each.
