Barnes selected as CHS Student of the Month

Moyra Barnes is the Concordia High School Student of the Month for January.

A bright, energetic young lady, Barnes is a member of the National Honor Society and carries a 4.0 GPA. “That's a lot of hard work,” she admits. “I study a lot.”

The daughter of Josh and Dyan Barnes, Moyra has also participated in cross country, trap club, band, forensics, and Panther 2 Panther tutoring.

Trap club? “I've been shooting since I was a kid,” Barnes said. “I got my first 25-out-of-25 this summer! But I'm not the best shot – there's a lot of young gentlemen on the team who are better.”

In band, Barnes plays – of all things - the trombone. “I was the only girl until last year,” she said, then added with a grin, “Three girls joined and that made it so much more enjoyable. It got kind of trying being around dudes all the time.”

One of the things Barnes likes to do in her spare time is read. “I'll read just about anything. I have a friend who also loves to read, and she recommends things. I'm going to try Colleen Hoover.” Hoover, who primarily writes novels in the romance and young adult fiction genres, has sold over 20 million books.

Barnes also likes to watch movies. Her favorite? “Oh, 'Hacksaw Ridge'! I love history, love action movies!”

Barnes plans to attend Cloud County Community College, then transfer to Fort Hays State University to major in secondary math education.

Is she a math geek? “I don't know, I guess so. It's a pretty black-and-white thing for me. Everyone in my class thinks I'm crazy because I enjoy math, but it just clicks for me. There are solutions to problems, and you find the right steps to solve the problems.”

Barnes wants to be a math teacher when she finishes college. “Mrs. Meyer (CHS teacher) said I could make it as a math a teacher, and that really helped me a lot. I think it is something I would really enjoy. I'm kind of in-between at what level I would teach. I was a tutor in the junior high, but I really enjoy teaching things like Algebra II, so it's probably high school math.”

When Barnes looks to the future she sees herself teaching in a small town. “I want to be in a small town kind of like here. I don't think I could do a big city.”

Barnes is grateful for all the support she has received over the years. “I want to thank my family and friends and teachers. I'm excited for what's ahead in my life.”

Congratulations to Moyra Barnes, the CHS Student of the Month.
