Case of Delta variant confirmed in county

The Cloud County Health Department (CCHD) reported three new cases of COVID-19 in the county today.
According to a release from the Cloud County Clerk's office, at least one of those positive cases is the highly contagious Delta variant.
The three people recently testing positive for COVID-19 had not been vaccinated.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes the Delta variant as a "hypertransmissible" strain that is responsible for 83.2% of new cases that had been genetically sequenced in the United States as of July 17.
A report issued by yalemedicine.org, stated that the 'Delta Variant' is the name for the B.1.617.2. variant, a SARS-CoV-2 mutation that originally surfaced in India. The first Delta case was identified in December 2020, and the strain spread rapidly, soon becoming the dominant strain of the virus in both India and then Great Britain, which saw record numbers of hospitalizations.
A story by National Public Radio (NPR) reported that health experts agree the Delta variant is the most contagious version of the coronavirus worldwide. It spreads about two to three times faster than the original version of the virus, and it's currently dominating the outbreak in the United States.
The NPR report also quoted a research study that determined that the Delta variant grows more rapidly inside people's respiratory tracts and reaches much higher levels of infection.
Health experts are urging those who remain unvaccinated to get their shots to stop the current outbreaks that are largely affecting areas with low vaccination rates.
