CCCC board approves certificate programs

Three new certificate programs were approved by the Cloud County Community College board of trustees during its regular meeting on Tuesday night.
If given final approval by the Kansas Board of Regents, Cloud County Community College (CCCC) will offer a pharmacy technician, small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) and welding certificate in the fall 2021 semester.
The pharmacy technician certificate is a 16 credit hour certificate that prepares individuals, under the supervision of pharmacists, to prepare medications, provide medications and related assistance to patients, and manage pharmacy clinical and business operations. The program will include instruction in medical and pharmaceutical terminology, principles of pharmacology and pharmaceutics, drug identification, pharmacy laboratory procedures, prescription interpretation, patient communication and education, safety procedures, record-keeping, measurement and testing techniques, pharmacy business operations, prescription preparation, logistics and dispensing operations, and applicable standards and regulations. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be prepared and qualified to sit for the Industry Certifications of Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Exam (CphT).
Cloud County received four letters of support for the program from area pharmacies.
The pharmacy technician certificate will be an online program for the first year.
The sUAS certificate is an 18 credit hour certificate that prepares individuals for careers in the field of remotely piloted aircraft and for use of sUAS to support other industries. The certificate would align with the Cloud County Community College sUAS 30 credit hour certificate and associate of applied science degree allowing students to gain an additional stackable certificate in the sUAS field of study.
The welding certificate will be offered at the CCCC Geary County Campus in partnership with Junction City High School. It prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to join or cut metal surfaces. The certificate includes instruction in arc welding, resistance welding, brazing and soldering, cutting, high-energy beam welding and cutting, solid state welding, ferrous and non-ferrous materials, oxidation-reduction reactions, welding metallurgy, welding processes and heat treating, structural design, safety, and applicable codes and standards. Upon completion of the certificate, students will be prepared and qualified to sit for the Industry Certificate of American Welding Society (AWS).
CCCC has received interest in the welding certificate program from high schools in the Concordia area.
Following a 15-minute executive session, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, that included the college president Amber Knoettgen, athletic director Matt Bechard, human resources director Chris Wilson, vice president for academic affairs Kim Zant and college attorney Justin Ferrell, the board voted to not renew the contract of men's head basketball coach Jordan Altman, effective April 30, and to direct Wilson to give written notice in person or by mail to Altman on or before March 31.
Altman will not coach Cloud County in the final four games of the regular season or in the postseason.
Assistant coach Taylor Jones will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Kevin Pounds, an instructor at the college, will be the interim assistant coach.
Altman was hired as the head basketball coach in 2017.
Included in the consent items approved by the board during the meeting was the renewal of Jones' contract and the renewal of the contract for assistant women's basketball coach Josiah White.
Also during the meeting, the board met in executive session for 20 minutes for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel. No action was taken.
