City caps off Sesquicentennial Celebration

The city of Concordia put a lid on Sesquicentennial Celebration with the burying of the time capsule on Friday.
Concordia celebrated with several events throughout the year to mark the 150th anniversary of the organization of the city in 2021.
A time capsule that was buried at the base of the war hero statue in City Park during the city's Centennial in 1971 was opened as was scheduled.
Contents of the time capsule were displayed during Celebration Day on August 14 and distributed to the persons to whom the items were addressed.
Several items were then placed in a new time capsule that was buried on Friday and is scheduled to be opened in 2071.
“Pretty fortunate to have the opportunity to celebrate our Sesquicentennial. A lot of events throughout the year kind of helped mark this significant anniversary of our town, culminating with the reburying of the time capsule. A lot of our community members were able to read letters that were written to them when the first time capsule went in. I know I received a letter. So, in my part, I ended up writing a letter to the mayor and city commission of 2071. I also ended up writing a couple of letters to my daughters so they will be able to read those in 50 years,” Concordia Mayor Chuck Lambertz said. “I think, as a community, being able to celebrate 150 years and looking forward to the opportunity to celebrate a Bicentennial in 50 years, I think speaks to the optimism that we have, recognizing where we have come from and and where we hope to go.”
