Copple, Davis win primary races

Ron Copple and Ken Davis recorded victories in the Republican primary election Tuesday.
Copple defeated three other candidates to earn the Republican nomination for the open 3rd District seat on the Cloud County board of commissioners.
Davis won the Republican nomination for Cloud County Sheriff over John Strowig.
No Democratic candidates filed for either position, and both Copple and Davis will be unopposed in the general election on November 3.
According to the unofficial results from the Cloud County Clerk's Office, Copple received 252 votes in the primary.
Lance Lagasse was second in the voting with 172 votes. Gail Engle received 150 and Michael Haley received 113.
There are approximately 50 provisional and mail-in ballots from voters in the 3rd District to be counted.
The county board of commissioners will canvass the votes on August 17.
Bill Garrison, Miltonvale, did not file for re-election to the 3rd District seat.
The 3rd District includes Grant, Summit, Solomon, Lyon, Center, East and West Meredith and East Lincoln Townships and the 3rd Ward of Concordia.
Copple has served for 19 years as the public works director for the city of Concordia.
Davis, currently a corporal with the Concordia Police Department, received 1,277 votes in the sheriff's race, to 583 for Strowig.
There are approximately 200 potential provisional and mail-in ballots to be counted in the county.
Candidates for all of the other offices in the county are running opposed.
Those offices, the candidate and the number of votes they received in the primary include:
County commission 2nd District, Gary Caspers, Republican, 538; County Clerk, Shella Thoman, Republican, 1,820; County Register of Deeds, Jana Roush, Republican, 1,741; County Attorney, Robert Walsh, Democrat, 275; County Treasurer, JoDee LeDuc, Democrat, 318.
In the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Pat Roberts it was Roger Marshall who carried Cloud County with 918 votes on his way to victory. Kris Kobach was second with 448 and Bob Hamilton was third with 278.
On the Democratic side for U.S. Senate, winner Barbara Bollier picked up 302 votes in Cloud County to 44 for Robert Leon Tillman.
Tracey Mann carried Cloud County in the Republican primary race for U.S. House of Representatives 1st District with 1,154 votes. Bill Clifford received 552. Jerry Molstad got 87 and Michael Soetaert got 69.
Mann defeated Clifford by a wide margin statewide.
In the Democratic primary for the 1st District seat, Kali Barnett received 223 votes in Cloud County to 118 for Christy Cauble Davis.
Barnett was declared the winner in the primary race, and will oppose Mann in the general election.
