KNRC members to participate in Field Day

GLASCO — Members of the Kansas-Nebraska Radio Club (KNRC) will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Friday and Saturday at the VFW Post 7697, 504 Railroad Ave.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during the field day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. The event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
KNRC was first organized in 1927 as the Night Owl Amateur Radio Club in Concordia. Since that time, the club has expanded to include members from both Kansas and Nebraska and has gone through two name changes.
Members of KNRC will be using emergency power and its emergency communications trailer for the Field Day events.
For more than 100 years, amateur radio, also called ham radio, has allowed people of all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster or emergency, all without needing a cell phone or the internet.
Field Day demonstrates the ability of ham radio to work reliably under conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network.
More than 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in the Field Day activities last year.
Anyone can become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as nine and as old as 100.
With clubs such as KNRC, it is easy for anybody to get involved in north central Kansas.
