Maddie Schlyer is CHS Student of the Month

Maddie Schlyer, the Concordia High School (CHS) Student of the Month for January, is a big fan of road trips. “I love Colorado,” she enthused. “I've been there a bunch of times. The mountains and scenery is just so different from what you see in Concordia. But a road trip can even be just going to Salina. Just something different.”

What about a Wish List road trip? “Anywhere to the beach, because I've never been to a beach. Or someplace like New York, because it would be the polar opposite of Concordia.”

The daughter of Brent and Jaime Cox, Schlyer has participated in cheer, volleyball, CYO-The Deep, and she is the executive secretary of the Student Council at CHS. In her spare time, other than taking awesome road trips, she likes to hang out with her friends, spend time with her family, and shop.

Schlyer is also on the 4.0 Honor Roll as CHS. So, using a dictionary, the Blade asked her to 'quantify her expertise' as a shopper. “I'm pretty good,” she said with a smile. “I could do online shopping 24/7. Clothes, shoes – sometimes I like to do a little experimenting. I'm on all the sales.”

Schlyer will attend Cloud County Community College (CCCC) to major in psychology. “I really like learning about, or trying to figure out, why people think the way they do. How people's minds work.”

She's not sure yet which college she will attend after CCCC, but wherever she goes, she knows she will miss Concordia. “When I go on to a four-year college, I'm going to miss Concordia. I really like it here. You learn to appreciate the little things, like driving out to the country to see cows.”

When Schlyer looks to the future, her thoughts are not far from Concordia. “I really would like to be back to Concordia after college. I can see myself helping people work through their problems. I would love to be a marriage therapist. And I would like to start a family someday." She smiled again and added, "I really love cats, too, so there will definitely be some cats and a dog in my future.”

Congratulations to Maddie Schlyer, the CHS Student of the Month for January.
