Taryn Roush is CHS Student of the Month

Taryn Roush can play guitar. Bass guitar, specifically.

“I like to play rock music,” Roush said. “80s and 90s classic rock. I like some stuff from the 2000s, too. There's some funk beats that I like to play.”

The son of Corey and Jana Roush, Taryn is the Concordia High School Student of the Month for April. He participates in the youth entrepreneurship challenge, football, the Delta Chi worship team, and is a member of the Concordia Wesleyan Church.

In his spare time, Roush enjoys paintball, playing piano and that funky bass guitar, watching sprint car races with his family, and reading.

“I'm probably a better guitar player than I am at the piano,” he said. “Some people can look at a sheet of music and play it on the piano in like 30 minutes. I would really have to work at it for a month.”

Roush said that he is at the intermediate level on the piano, and likes to play classical pieces such as music from Beethoven or Bach. But the guitar is still his favorite, even though he doesn't have his own band. “I play in a youth group at the Wesleyan Church,” he said, and then added with a smile, “We don't play rock-and-roll in the church group.”

His favorite non-musical pastime is paintball. “I don't go paintballing very often, but I really enjoy playing it. This year the seniors and a bunch of coaches went and played at Elite Sports Paintball in Assaria. That was the most fun I've ever had.”

After he graduates from CHS in May, Roush will attend Cloud County Community College (CCCC), and then transfer to Kansas State University where he plans to get a degree in athletic training.

“I have an older brother and I went to his sporting events, and I would watch how Steve Schroeder (CCCC athletic trainer) worked with the athletes at the college. I've always loved sports, and if I can't participate, being an athletic trainer will allow me to stay involved with sports.”

When he finishes at CCCC and moves to Manhattan to attend K-State, Roush knows he will miss his hometown. “I'm going to miss Concordia. I really like it here. But I'm also excited to live in Manhattan. My brother is already there at Manhattan Tech (Manhattan Technical College), and I've spent a lot of time in the city. So I'm really looking forward to new challenges and meeting new people.”

When Roush looks to the future he sees himself in a big city and hopefully working for a Division 1 school as an athletic trainer. “I would like to be involved with football at a D-1 school, or even basketball. I'd like to be somewhere on the East Coast, like Kentucky or Virginia. But definitely on the coast.”

Congratulations to Taryn Roush – CHS Student of the Month for April.
