ns loss on CCCC

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Dakota Miller and Benny Hernandez picked up wins for the Cloud County Community College wrestling team in a dual against NCAA Division II opponent Colorado Mesa University on Thursday.
Colorado Mesa, picking up seven consecutive wins after falling behind 9-0, defeated Cloud County in the dual, 36-12.
The Thunderbirds will face a second straight NCAA Division II team when it takes on Western State Colorado University in Gunnison on Saturday.
“These duals are serving as a training purpose. We really want to get these guys to the point where they understand how to wrestle against two really good NCAA Division II teams,” Cloud County coach Cody Cole said, “We want to get as much film as we can, process what we need to work on against high quality opponents we may not get to see without this opportunity.”
Cloud County 125 pounder Blayne Harris received a forfeit to open the dual.
Miller then upped his record to 5-1 by defeating Tim Romero in the 133-pound class.
“Dakota is a talented wrestler and we're still trying to get him into wrestling shape after he took some time off,” Cole said, “Last weekend we kind of saw him wrestling five or five and a half strong minutes and (Thursday) we saw a solid six. We're still striving to get that full seven minutes where he's going the whole time, but he did a great job of securing that win for us.”
Colorado Mesa's Eduardo Penha pinned Tyren Castonguay in 4:05 in the 141-pound class.
Bryce Gfeller, 149 pounds, had a 7-3 lead on Colorado Mesa's Kyle Kintz before losing by fall in the second period.
Cloud County's Quentin Jiner lost to the Mavericks' Payton Tawater, ranked 11th in the nation, by technical fall, 18-2 in the 157-pound class.
Noah Aziere, wrestling at 165 pounds for the T-Birds, was beaten 15-5 by 12th-ranked Jason Buhr.
Matthew Cruickshank, 174 pounds, lost by technical fall to Colorado Mesa's Donald Negus.
Jayden Creach was pinned by Patrick Romero in the 184-pound class.
Zach Brown, 197, was beaten 16-5 by Hunter Mooring.
Hernandez then capped of the dual by posting a 10-7 victory over Clayton Voytilla in the 285-pound class.
“He was smaller height wise, but they weighed in the same. Benny is just so good at moving guys and creating angles,” Cole said, “Even though he's a heavyweight, he wrestles more like a 184 pounder. He hand fights well and scores when opportunities present themselves. He's been great about his diet this year and is buying in, which is allowing him to compete at a high level.”
