Martha (Marty) Everly Wells died on August 31, 2021, after a short, courageous battle with the Covid-19 virus. Marty was fully vaccinated and doctors attributed her breakthrough infection to the large number of Americans who continue to refuse to be vaccinated providing fertile ground for the virus to continue its relentless attack.
Marty was born in Salina, Kansas, in 1955 to Donald F. Everly and Phyllis Joan (Guipre) Everly. As an infant the family moved to Alaska where she lived until the age of 17 when the family moved to Middletown, Rhode Island. She was a graduate of Middletown High School. Marty received a nursing diploma at the Newman School of Nursing in Emporia, Kansas. She was employed as an RN at the time of retirement at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. She felt strongly that it was a great privilege to serve the veterans of the U.S. Military.
After her retirement Marty moved to Glasco, Kan. She was active in the community serving on the board of the Glasco Public Library and working as needed at the Nicol Home in Glasco. Marty had a life-long passion and a gift for working with senior citizens.
Marty is survived by her husband, Luis Wells; her daughter, Kyle Myers; son-in-law, JD Myers and three grandsons, Landon, Luke, and Logan. She is also survived by her brother, Douglas Everly, and her sister, Mary Everly McCauley. She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Daniel F. Everly.
Granny, as she was known to many, chased her sunshine her entire life. Her family and her friends were her sunshine. She always went out of her way to brighten other peoples' day. It could be a text, a card, a hug, a visit or a little gift. She had an uncanny way of making people feel special and heard. She would listen with her kind blue eyes and say “there must be a reason I needed to know that.” She also had a passion for attending sporting events and cheering on her boys and all her friends. She rarely missed an event. I know all the kids thought of her so fondly and that's pretty awesome for a granny! She wanted everyone to chase their own sunshine.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no public services. The family is grateful for the condolences. In lieu of flowers we recommend memorial gifts to the Nicol Home, 303 E Buffalo, Glasco, KS 67445. The best way, however, to honor her memory is to carry out her dying wish, “Tell everyone to be kind to each other.”
Mom, you were, and will always be, the sunshine of our lives. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
