A Closer Walk

David, the shepherd boy who became king of all Israel, speaks to God's Omnipresence. "Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Thy hand will lead me, And Thy right hand will lay hold of me," Psalm 139:7-10 NASB.

The psalmist recognizes that he cannot escape the gracious and loving hand of the Lord. If he goes to heaven God is there. If he makes his bed in Sheol (the underworld) God is there also. If he takes the wings of the dawn God is there. If he dwells in the remotest part of the sea, even there God's hand will lead him. And God's right hand will lay hold of him. The right hand of the Lord signifies God's power and strength. One Pastor said that the nuance in the Hebrew indicates that David was surprised to figure this all out and to come to this conclusion: Where can I go from Thy Spirit?
It is the same with us. Where can we go from His Spirit? No matter how fast or how far we run, when we get there (no matter where there is), God is already there. For an illustration read the first chapter of Jonah. This God we worship and serve is Omnipresent. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines omnipresent as being in all places at all times. There is nowhere we can go that our God is not already there. One Pastor put it this way, "Anywhere there is a place, God is there." So we are never alone, even if we are alone.
The Lord God is there, even in the stomach of a great fish, as in the case of Jonah. Here is Jonah's prayer from the fish's stomach. "Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, and he said, 'I called out of my distress to the Lord, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; Thou didst hear my voice. For Thou hast cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Thy breakers and billows passed over me. So I said, 'I have been expelled from Thy sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Thy holy temple. Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, weeds were wrapped around my head. I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever. But Thou hast brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. While I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer came to Thee, Into Thy holy temple. Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord.' Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land," Jonah 2:1-10 NASB.
No matter where we go, whether to the highest mountain or the bottom of the deep blue sea to the roots of the mountains as Jonah put it, our God is already there. Even in the getting there part, the Lord is there. Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Where indeed.
