A Closer Walk

When you hear the phrase, “the Throne of Grace,” what do you imagine? What do you picture in your mind? The Throne of Grace resides in Heaven. Let's see what the Bible says about it.

"In the year of King Uzziah's death, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called out to another and said, 'Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory,'" Isaiah 6:1-3 NASB. Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts. He is lofty and exalted. And the train of His robe fills the temple.
The prophet Ezekiel was also shown a vision of heaven. "Now above the expanse that was over their heads there was something resembling a throne, like lapis lazuli in appearance; and on that which resembled a throne, high up, was a figure with the appearance of a man. Then I noticed from the appearance of His loins and upward something like glowing metal that looked like fire all around within it, and from the appearance of His loins and downward I saw something like fire; and there was a radiance around Him. As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord...", Ezekiel 1:26-28 NASB. Ezekiel's vision seems to be less about the throne, and more about the One who sits on the throne. Here we have a brief description of God's appearance and the radiance of His glory.
The apostle John gives us another view of heaven. "And after these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, 'Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.' Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne. And He who was sitting was like a jasper stone and a sardius in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, like an emerald in appearance...and from the throne proceed flashes of lightning and peals of thunder...and before the throne there was, as it were, a sea of glass like crystal...", Revelation 4:1-3 and 5-6 NASB.
In each of these passages we learn something about heaven, or the throne of grace, or the One sitting on the throne. Upon examination, one of the first things we might discern is that each of these individuals, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and John were grappling with the complete and total inadequacy of human language to express and speak about what they were being shown. "Something resembling a throne..." "like lapis lazuli..." "And He who was sitting was like a jasper stone..." We can learn from this that heaven, and the throne, and the One sitting on the throne are beyond our biggest and widest imaginings. Heaven must be MAGNIFICENT! Overwhelming to us mere humans. One pastor said to imagine the best and greatest and most pleasing heaven that we possibly can; but heaven is far, far better than that.
The Throne of grace resides in a specific place in heaven. It is visible to the occupants of heaven. But even better is that the Lord God Almighty sits on this throne. His Throne. When we go to the Throne of Grace we are at the very feet of the creator of the earth and all it contains. The Lord God Almighty. Who was, and is, and is to come. Glory to God! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
