Letter to the Editor 11-2-18

Dear editor,
I am a native Kansan who has been proud to be a Republican for most of my adult life.
Aren’t you tired of being part of an “experiment” that obviously didn’t work? The Brownback Plan not only didn’t work but then highjacked our highway funds. Over $2,500,000,000.00 (that’s right $2.5 Billion Dollars) of sales tax dollars earmarked for our highway system, which was one of the best in the Nation. Those dollars could have adequately maintained our roads and made substantial improvements. Plus, those road projects would have provided a strong positive stimulus to our Kansas economy. Instead, our money went to make up for other lost tax revenues. The sad result is that we didn’t get the stimulus but we still have to pay back more than $2.0 Billion in “Highway Bonds” plus interest, while our highways are deteriorating!
Kris Kobach has stated he wants to continue to experiment on us, to continue the Brownback Plan. So every time the tires of our cars and trucks hit a pothole on the highway, it makes a noise that sounds suspiciously like “Brownback……Kobach!” to me.
Mr. Kobach wants to remove Justices or change our Kansas Constitution, so that there is no check and balance on whether our Legislators and Governor provide the “suitable education” to all of our students, which the Constitution so wisely requires. Do you realize that safeguard ensures that local students are to receive the same basic education as students in Shawnee Mission and Wichita?
What Kris Kobach wants is more power, to appoint judges, to decide who gets our tax dollars. But look how he handled the power he convinced the Legislature he needed to track down the “massive number of illegal immigrants” he told us were committing “voter fraud”. It took him several years to find a handful of “violators”, some of whom a federal Judge said seemed more confused about voting rules, than willful.
In that case Mr. Kobach, who has a law degree from Yale and should know better, was twice found in contempt by the Judge and ordered to get remedial legal education because of numerous failures to follow legal rules. That $1,000.00 fine was paid with our money, using a State of Kansas credit card. Evidently, so will the also ordered payment of $26,000.00 of opposing party’s attorney fees.
So, I’m going to vote for Laura Kelly for Governor. She has vast experience as a Legislator and has been a reasonable voice with common sense plans for the greater good of all Kansans.
Please give Laura Kelly your serious consideration.
Sincerely, Dana Brewer
