Letter to the Editor 3-11-22

Dear editor,
On Friday, March 4, 2022, I attended a Town Hall meeting in Concordia sponsored by United States Senator Roger Marshall. There were 50 to 60 people present.
After the meeting a group of my friends and I were discussing the meeting in the parking lot. A gentleman overheard us, asked if he could have some input into our discussion. We said “yes” and then we dismissed the question. I want to apologize to him for having allowed us to do that. And then I want to remind him that he was not really asking a question. He wanted to tell us we were absolutely wrong in our discussion and that he agrees with Senator Marshall. I wish I had asked him what he really wanted to say to us and then we could have had a more civil and perhaps kind encounter.
I also want the gentleman and those attendees who agree with him to know that Senator Marshall did make false statements and accusations during his presentation. He needed to have told the truth about the voting rights bills that the states are passing. He needed to have told the truth about the 2020 election being valid. He needed to have clarified the truth about the conspiracy theories he knows are false. I believe he told us what he thought we “wanted” to hear (so that we would re-elect him). We need a leader who tells us the truth because he believes we can handle it – and we can. Truth is what we need from our leaders, and when we can tell the truth to each other, we will be reunited!
The attendees could have handled the truth about what he said – we are Kansans! It was obvious that they trusted Marshall – I believe he betrayed their trust on many points. I believe he patronized them at the cost of truth and half truths. It is really hard to keep up with all of the issues and, again, I believe he exploited much of our ignorances. I keep up on voting issues and the validity of voting rights and I felt betrayed by Marshall's deliberate misrepresentations on that issue. He knows what is right!
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia Lewter, CSJ
