Letter to the Editor 3-4-22

Dear editor,
Let me start by saying that I served this city as city clerk/finance director for many years. Following my retirement, I served on the city commission and as mayor for one year.
Never in my experience did we ignore people who appeared at our meetings with a problem. They were never denied the opportunity to fully present a serious issue. This very thing happened at the city commission meeting yesterday when my daughter tried to explain what happened to her dog on Sunday. Her little dog (all of eight pounds) was viciously attacked by a pit bull dog that wasn't wearing a collar or a leash. The owner of the dog did absolutely nothing to stop his dog.
Apparently the city commission has seen fit to have a timekeeper to keep the citizens of this community from being able to fully explain a situation by only allowing a person three minutes to speak. I think this speaks of control beyond my comprehension.
Following the attack, my daughter had to take her dog to the vet for shots and pain medication which she is still taking.
A friend of mine told me a story about her cat. Two dogs running at large attacked the cat and literally tore the cat apart.
Under the Code of the City of Concordia, Chapter 4, Article 4, Ordinance 4-402 entitled “Animals at Large, etc.” this code should be strictly enforced to protect us.
Respectfully,
Verna Ferguson
Former city/clerk/finance director
Former city commissioner
Now a tax paying, law abiding citizen
