on Kansas Notable Books list

State librarian Eric Norris has selected “Farmers Unite! Planting a Protest for Fair Prices” by Concordia's Lindsay Metcalf to the list of Kansas Notable Books for 2021.
“Farmers Unite! Planting a Protest for Fair Prices” is a story about the agriculture movement protests in 1979.
In the late 1970s grain prices had tanked, farm auction notices filled newspapers and people had forgotten that food didn't grow in the grocery stores. So on February 5, 1979, thousands of tractors from all parts of the country flooded Washington, D.C., in protest. That protest included farmers from the Concordia area.
Metcalf, a journalist who grew up on a family farm, shares the rarely told story about grassroots perseverance and economic justice.
The annual selection of the 15 books on the Kansas Notable Books list celebrates the best in Kansas writing, and features quality titles with wide public appeal that are either written by a Kansan or are about a Kansas-related topic.
Metcalf will be recognized at the Notable Books awards ceremony during the Kansas Book Festival at Washburn University in September.
