Nathan Edson DAR Honors Good Citizens and Young Essayists

The Nathan Edson Chapter of the Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) recognized and awarded five area students with the Good Citizens award at the Chapter’s annual Presidents Day Tea held February 9, 2020, at Clyde, Kan.
These students are chosen by their individual schools based on their qualities of dependability (truthfulness, honesty and punctuality), service (cooperation, helpfulness and responsibility), leadership (personality, self-control and initiative), and patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals).
Receiving their awards from Chapter Regent Jeanna Walters-Fancella this year were Jillian Dreher, Clay Center Community High School, daughter of Dan and Rayleen Dreher; Emily Hendrickson, Hanover High School, daughter of Stephen and Brenda Hendrickson; James “Jackson” Burch, Glasco High School, son of James and Yvonne Burch; Chloe Waite, Miltonvale High School, daughter of Robert Waite and Jamie Fengel; and Emily Genereux, Clifton-Clyde High School, daughter of William and Wendy Genereux.
The students chosen for the Good Citizens awards were also eligible to participate in an essay scholarship contest. The student is given the essay topic in a sealed envelope and given two hours to write it.  They cannot use any reference materials except a dictionary during the process.  They are allowed to type it on the computer but cannot use the internet.  The entire process is proctored by a member of faculty or a DAR member.  Once these essays are received by the Chapter they are sent to be judged by independent judges outside the chapter. These essays are judged on expression, originality and historical accuracy.
Jillian Dreher’s essay was chosen as this year’s winner.  Her essay has moved on to the state level. The state winners will be announced at the KSDAR annual conference which will be held April 30 – May 2, 2020, in Wichita, Kan.
The students each received a certificate, pin and a small monetary award for their participation.
The DAR Good Citizens program is a wonderful way to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools, and communities. Every fall the chapter sends information to counselors at Concordia Senior High School, Clay Center Community High School, Hanover High School, Miltonvale High School, Glasco High School, Clifton-Clyde High School, Linn High School and Washington High School.
