October 29, 1971

In an effort to call attention to the friendliness of the city, the Concordia Chamber of Commerce officially designated the first week of November as “Smile Week”... either a faculty team from Cloud County Community College or Concordia High School teaching staffs would be champs at the juco's intramural touch football game, with proceeds earmarked toward the purchase of a weight machine for physical education classes... Mrs. Janet Davis returned from a seven-week trip to the Orient, having visited Japan, Korea, Thailand, Bali, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Sister Christella Buser's ability to listen and tell stories led her to write “Flowers from the Ark,” a collection of true stories from the Homes of L'Arche, a ministry to disabled people... Marine Pfc. James D. Kearn, son of Ralph D. and Phyllis A. Kearn, recently completed basic training with Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, and was promoted to his present rank... Carol Badsky, daughter of the late Raymond and Edith Richard, had been promoted from manager of quality of care to director of quality improvement at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas.

Joe Jindra, owner and general manager of KNCk Radio, NICk 94.9 FM and 98.3 FM, received the Huck Boyd Leader of the Year Award in recognition for his leadership in community radio... the Concordia Middle School class taught by Mrs. Kelley won the CMS boxtop collection contest, having collected 1,009 boxtops since the beginning of the year... wheat was selling at $7.05, corn was $6.37, and milo was $6.37 per bushel on local markets.

Braden Brownell and Scott Blochlinger, both seniors at Concordia High School, earned their Eagle Scout honors... for the second year in a row, the Concordia High School Panthers finished second in the state volleyball tournament... winners in the Haunting in the Hood children's costume contest were Elliot Newville, Burklee Jackson, and Katelyn Reedy... wheat was selling at $2.99, corn was $3.00, and milo was $2.55 per bushel on local markets.

Concordia honored its first responders on October 28, First Responders Day, established as a day of appreciation and recognition for our nation's law enforcement officers, fire fighters, emergency medical professionals and dispatchers... a hit-and-run accident caused extensive damage to the wall at the Nazareth Motherhouse... the Concordia Panthers won the Central Kansas Football League sixth grade championship... wheat was selling at $5.19, corn was $3.86, and milo was $5.16 per bushel on local markets.
