November 5, 1971

Frantiska Palecek, Munden, who won the Concordia Centennial painting competition, had a display of paintings on exhibit at the Concordia Country Club, as well as paintings at the Frank Carlson Library... Jerry Istas won overall Grand Champion in the annual Future Farmers of America Crop Show, and his eight first places put him past his brother Tom, who had three first places, making Jerry the overall Reserve Grand Champion... during “Smile Week,” Deanna Buckland was selected from among the customers at Dairy Queen as having the “sweetest smile.”

Susan Sutton, director of humanities at Cloud County Community College and Susie Haver, curator of the Brown Grand Theatre, joined Governor Bill Graves at the Capitol Rotunda in Topeka to honor retiring U.S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum, honoring her for her “distinguished service to the Arts and Humanities in the United States”... winners in the Tri-County National Bank pumpkin-decorating contest included Dustin Thomas, Kyle Lervold, Jesse Wetzel, Abby James, Eileen Remley and Stacie LeClair... Duane and Jill Mabon announced the birth of their daughter, Emily Marie.

Eunice Carlson Rolfs, Junction City, daughter of the late Frank Carlson, attended the opening of the “Frank Carlson: Prairie Politician” exhibit at the Frank Carlson Library... Gena Kearn, sixth-grade art teacher at Concordia Middle School, demonstrated how to tie die t-shirts at the CMS Family Science Night... with a 2-0 win over Western Texas, the Cloud County Community College soccer team earned a trip to the national tournament... wheat was selling at $7.10, corn was $6.43, and milo was $6.43 per bushel on local markets.

Cloud County Community College's Drama Department performed Shakespeare's “Macbeth”... for their project for 48 Hours of 4-H, the Republican Valley 4-H Club decided to clean out the flower beds at the fairgrounds... Sajen Kemling, Keyan Miller and Hunter Schroeder recorded first-place finishes for the Concordia Junior High School wrestling team's first outing of the season... wheat was selling at $2.97, corn was $2.90, and milo was $2.50 per bushel on local markets.

Ashley Hutchinson and Ragena Belden were officially elected to the Concordia city commission, filling seats vacated by Mayor Mark Matthew and Keaton Snavely... Chas Carlgren was chosen as Student of the Month at Concordia High School... Hill and Dale 4-H club ordered new t-shirts, designed by Gunnar Hale... wheat was selling at $5.33, corn was $3.79, and milo was $5.74 per bushel on local markets.
