June 21, 1971

Navy Petty Officer First Class William B. Cope was serving aboard the destroyer escort ship USS Harold E. Holt which visited Portland, Ore., during the city's famous Rose Festival as a member of the Navy's “Rose Festival Fleet”... Cloud County Community College-bound former Concordia High School athlete Doug Herman won the decathlon in the West Kansas Track Club meet held in Hays... David and Janet Tallent brought a bat with three babies to the Blade office, but after learning how many bats carry rabies, decided to free the insect-eating bats by the river.

Nutter Mortuary held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony... Nancy Molter, who owned and operated M&N Iron and Metal and Recycling with her husband Marty, received the Kansas Recycler of the Year Award... Concordia High School Class of 1946 held its 50-year reunion, and cast members of the senior class play, “I Remember Mama,” portrayed their roles once again... an environmental crew from Manhattan was drilling and taking soil samples behind the Citizens National Bank parking lot to check for contaminants.

Danette Toone, who was nearing her first anniversary as president of Cloud County Community College, spoke at the Nazareth Motherhouse as part of the 2011 Concordia Speakers Series... Terri E. and Mark J. Headrick announced the birth of their son, Dane Byron... students from Cloud County who completed requirements for master's and education specialist degrees at Fort Hays State University included Kimberly Reynolds, Annette Silva and Matthew Carlson... wheat was selling at $7.79, corn was $6.78, and milo was $6.38 per bushel on local markets.

Melvin and Joan (Cote) McNeil celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary... at an early evening outdoor ceremony at Eighteen Ninety Events in Platte, City, Mo., Cassie Lowell, daughter of Jim and Lori Lowell, and Erick Auxier exchanged wedding vows... Lorene Huscher celebrated her 101st birthday... wheat was selling at $3.84, corn was $3.72, and milo was $3.43 per bushel on local markets.

Josh Meyer, funeral director for Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home in Concordia, Chaput Mortuary in Clyde and Melby Mortuary in Mankato, had been elected the secretary/treasurer of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association... Concordia Chevrolet/Buick and the Lions posted wins on the opening night of Peewee Baseball play... wheat was selling at $4.11, corn was $2.98, and milo was $3.48 per bushel on local markets.
