American Legion clips Knights of Columbus

WASHINGTON — A solo home run by Brandon Vignery in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Concordia American Legion a 1-0 victory over the Concordia Knights of Columbus in the quarterfinals of the Kansas Pee Wee Baseball Association State Tournament Tuesday night.
The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Vignery led off the inning with a home run to put the American Legion up 1-0.
Treyton Biery singled to lead off the top of the fifth inning for the Knights of Columbus.
Vignery came on in relief of Layne Herrman and struck out the next three Knights of Columbus batters to preserve the win.
The American Legion advances to the semifinals, and will play Osborne at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Osborne downed Linn 8-2 in the quarterfinals.
Hanover slipped past the Beloit Rampage 7-6 and Smith Center thumped Valley Heights, 18-1.
Hanover and Smith Center will meet in the other semifinal game.
The championship and third-place games are scheduled for Friday night.
The Knights of Columbus reached the quarterfinals by clipping Clifton 9-8 and the American Legion received a bye.
In the other first-round games, the Concordia Lions fell 4-1 to the Beloit Rampage, Smith Center shut out Bremen 10-0 and Linn edged Pike Valley, 5-4.
Herrman and the Knights of Columbus' Grayson Farha locked up in a pitching dual in the quarterfinal game.
Farha limited the American Legion to just one hit in three innings and struck out seven.
Herrman gave up two hits, struck out seven and walked two through the first four innings.
Farha had retired seven consecutive batters before Vignery's home run that proved to be the difference.
