Bulldogs use late surge to knock off Panthers, 46-40

MARYSVILLE — Scoring the final six points of the game, the Marysville Bulldogs turned back the Concordia Panthers 46-40 in a North Central Kansas League rematch on Tuesday night.
Concordia had defeated Marysville 52-34 in the first matchup of the season.
The two teams were locked up in a tight battle throughout the second meeting.
Trailing 40-38 late in the fourth quarter, Concordia tied the game on a basket by Aceyn Cash with 1:53 remaining.
The Panthers would not score again.
A three-point shot by Jack Lauer with 1:30 on the clock put Marysville on top to stay, 43-40.
Cav Carlgren, the leading scorer for Concordia, was called for charging 27 seconds later, and fouled out of the game.
Lauer was fouled with 58 seconds left. He made one of two free throws to up the Bulldogs' lead to 44-40.
Payton Breese was unable connect on a three-point attempt and was then whistled for his fifth foul.
Rook Williams missed on both free throw attempts with 25 seconds on the clock.
Cash couldn't knock down a three-point attempt and Williams got a dunk in transition with time running out to make the final margin six points.
“We are not making plays when we need to,” Concordia coach Derek Holmes said. “We need some guys to step up and make plays.”
The loss was the third straight for the Panthers who fall to 6-3 overall and 2-3 in league play.
“We win together, we lose together. We have got to get it figured out and get it turned around,” Holmes said.
Carlgren, who scored 29 points in Concordia's win over Marysville, finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Cash scored nine points and Tyler Hobrock had seven points and six rebounds.
The Panthers shot just 38 percent (12 of 32) from the field and had 16 turnovers, 13 in the second half.
“Our decision making, along with not making shots, is not good right now. We are forcing it when it is not there and then we don't hit someone when they are open. Just out of sync,” Holmes said.
Marysville, now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the NCKL, was patient on offense and stingy on defense the second time around against Concordia.
The Bulldogs led 10-6 late in the first quarter.
A basket by Hobrock and a three by Breese gave Concordia its first lead at 11-10.
There would be three lead changes in the first six minutes of the second period.
Trailing 19-16, the Panthers had Cash score seven points in less than a minute and Carlgren make one of two free throws to go up 24-19.
Sam Jespersen hit a short bank shot in the final seconds of the first half, and Marysville trailed 24-21.
Lauer, who led the Bulldogs with 17 points, scored the first two points of the second half to close the gap to 24-23.
A basket by Joey Henderson and four points by Carlgren gave the Panthers their largest lead of the game, 30-23.
Marysville answered with seven straight points to tie the game at 30-30.
A three-point play by Carlgren gave Concordia a 33-30 cushion heading into the fourth period.

Baskets by Otott and Jespersen put the Bulldogs up 40-38.
Cash tied the game with 1:03 to play and then Marysville scored the last six points to avenge its earlier loss.
Otott joined Lauer in double figures for the Bulldogs with 13 points.
