CCCC softball picks up win

Picking up its first win since knocking off Hesston College back on March 28, the Cloud County Community College softball team halted an 11-game losing skid by defeating Coffeyville Community College in the second game of a Jayhawk Conference Division II doubleheader last Saturday at the CCCC Softball Field.

Cloud County dropped the first game to Coffeyville, 7-0.

A two-run double by Allie Schubert gave Coffeyville a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game two.

Cloud County, now 16-20 overall and 2-12 in conference play, put up four runs in the bottom of the first, and would not trail again.

Camille Stauffer singled with the bases loaded to drive in Brooklyn McCormick. Kaitlynn Baca scored on a bad throw.

Kaylee Pinneo and Stauffer each scored on wild pitches to make it 4-0.

The Thunderbirds extended the lead to 7-0 with three runs in the second inning.

Cloud County again loaded the bases and a wild pitch allowed Jillian Artiges to score.

Baca got home on a sacrifice fly by Pinneo.

Coffeyvllle made it 7-3 with a run in the top of the fourth inning.

The T-Birds responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 10-3.

Baca singled home Artiges with the first run and scored on a fly ball by Stauffer.

Kiera Brack singled home McCormick.

Coffeyville added one run in the fifth inning and one in the seventh to make the final 10-5.

Paige Mahler pitched all seven innings to get the win. She gave up five runs, two earned, on nine hits, struck out three and walked one.

Baca was 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored.

Coffeyville’s Justina Raye shut out Cloud County on three hits in game one. She struck out eight and walked one in seven innings.

The Red Ravens scored one run in the second inning.

Three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth gave Coffeyville a 7-0 cushion.

Brack took the loss. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits, struck out five and walked one.

Pinneo had two of Cloud County’s three hits.

The T-Birds dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader to Kansas City Kansas Community College in Kansas City on April 17.

KCK shut out Cloud County 8-0 in game one and won game two, 14-1.

The Blue Devils got out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one.

KCK tacked on one run in the second inning.

Pushing across four runs in the fourth inning, the Blue Devils ended the game because of the eight-run rule.

The T-Birds were limited to three hits.

Brack allowed 12 runs, five earned, on 12 hits, struck out four and walked two in four and two-thirds innings in suffering the loss.

In the second game, the Blue Devils scored one run in the first inning, four in the second and five in the third go take a 10-0 lead.

Cloud County scored its only run in the top of the fourth inning.

KCK added four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and led 15-1.

The game ended after the top of the fifth inning.

Brecken Whitney pitched two and a third innings in taking the loss. She gave up 10 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits and walked two.

KCK’s Hanna Acree, a freshman from Concordia, got the win. She surrendered one run on four hits, struck out three and walked two.

Stauffer had two of Cloud County’s hits.
