Chapman hands Panthers pair of losses

CHAPMAN — The Concordia High School softball team dropped both ends of a North Central Kansas League doubleheader to the Chapman Irish on Tuesday.
Chapman scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally past Concordia 8-3 in the opening game of the twinbill.
An eight-run fourth inning propelled the Irish to a 16-6 victory in the second game.
Concordia, now 7-5 overall and 0-4 in league play, put up two runs in the top of the first inning in game one.
Hanna Acree led off the inning with a single and scored on a base hit by Erinae Flesher.
An error on a ball hit by Shaelin Giersch allowed Flesher to score.
Chapman cut the deficit in half at 2-1 with a run in the third inning.
Brecklynn Bonner singled and scored on a double by Acree in the top of the fifth inning, and the Panthers led 3-1.
Chapman, 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the league, sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on six hits, a walk, and two errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to go on top to stay, 8-3.
Madalynn Harold hit a grand slam home run in the inning.
Concordia was shut out over the final two innings.
Acree pitched six innings in taking the loss and gave up eight runs on 12 hits, struck out five and walked one. She had two of the Panthers' five hits in the game.
Two runs in the top of the first inning gave Concordia the early lead in game two.
Flesher reached base on a fielder's choice. She would steal home for the first run.
Kenlee Williams singled with two out, stole second and scored on a single by Giersch.
Chapman responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and would not trail again.
The Irish extended its lead to 7-2 with four runs in the second inning.
Flesher singled and scored on a base hit by Emalee Johnson in the top of the third inning, and the Panthers trailed 7-3.
Chapman made it 8-3 with a run in the bottom of the third.
Giersch singled and scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth inning to make it 8-4.
The Irish then racked up eight runs on three hits, three walks and three errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to up its lead to 16-4.
Scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Panthers made it a 16-6 game.
Acree and Flesher each singled.
An error on a ball hit by Johnson allowed Acree to score.
Flesher would be thrown out at home.
Giersch singled home Johnson.
The game ended after five innings.
Flesher allowed 16 runs, six earned, on nine hits, struck out four and walked nine in taking the loss. She had two hits and scored two runs.
Giersch was 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in.
Concordia will have a week off before playing a league doubleheader at Abilene next Tuesday.
