CHS drops pair of league games to Irish

CHAPMAN — Surrendering 36 runs, the Concordia High School baseball team dropped both ends of a North Central Kansas League doubleheader to Chapman on Tuesday.
Chapman used a 13-run third inning to pull away to a 22-7 victory in game one.
Concordia fell 14-8 in the second game, and is now 2-7 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
“To Chapman's credit, they hit the ball well, but we gave them way too many free bases on walks and hit by pitches,” Concordia coach Brandt Hutchinson said. “Offensively, we are having good at bats and hitting the ball well. Defensively, we are playing well enough to win games, but we have to do a better job of pounding the strike zone.”
Concordia got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one.
Nathan Brown reached base on an error with one out and Stryker Hake singled.
A base hit by Dalton Owen got both runs home.
Torin Cavanaugh hit a two-run home run as Chapman answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Concordia tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the second inning.
Payton Breese and Joey Henderson each walked.
Owen singled with two out to drive in two more runs.
Chapman, sending 17 batters to the plate, erupted for 13 runs on eight hits and four walks and a hit batter in the third inning to open up a 17-4 advantage.
The Panthers made it 17-7 with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Hake walked with two out, stole second and scored on a single by Owen.
Maddox Frey singled and Keegun Beims doubled to knock in two runs.
The Irish scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 22-7 and end the game because of the 15-run rule.
Concordia used four pitchers in the game. Braeden Primeaux pitched the first two innings in taking the loss. Breese, Beims and Caleb Hanson pitched in relief.
Owen had three hits in three at bats and drove in five runs for the Panthers.
Beims was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in.
Frey had two hits and Hake scored two runs.
Chapman scored one run in the first inning and six in the second to grab a 7-0 lead in the second game of the twinbill.
The Panthers closed the gap to 7-5 with five runs in the top of the third inning.
Dustin Sterrett and Henderson singled to lead off the inning.
A two-out single by Hake got two runs home.
Frey drove in a run with single.
Beims doubled home a run and scored on a base hit by Drew Benfer.
Chapman extended its lead to 13-5 with six runs in the fourth inning.
Concordia added three runs in the fifth inning, and trailed 13-8.
Owen reached base on a fielder's choice and Frey singled.
A double by Beims got Owen home.
Frey scored on a ground ball by Benfer and Sterrett singled home Beims.
Chapman tacked on one run in the sixth inning to go up 14-8.
Frey pitched the first inning and two-thirds for Concordia. Henderson, Hake and Shelby Giersch pitched in relief.
Beims was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.
Benfer and Hake knocked in two runs each.
Sterrett had three hits in four at bats and Frey was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Panthers travel to Wamego on Thursday for the NCKL/MEL matchup.
