CHS girls drop opener to Beloit

BELOIT — Opening the season on the road, a young and inexperienced Concordia High School girls’ basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start in suffering a 49-14 loss to Beloit on Friday night.
Concordia, hampered by turnovers, trailed Beloit 38-5 at halftime.
The Panthers had a bulk of their 27 turnovers in the first two quarters.
Concordia would limit the Trojans to just 11 points in the second half, while scoring nine.
“Obviously we have a lot to work on, but we are young and inexperienced,” Concordia coach Carly Bloomfield said. “They played hard. The first half was pretty ugly, but the second half I felt like they were picking up on some things and they were trying to do the things we have been working on in practice. It is just they need more experience and more reps.”
Falling behind 5-0 to start the game, the Panthers would get a basket by Ashley Bartlett to make it 5-2.
Concordia would then go the final five-plus minutes without scoring in the first quarter.
Beloit knocked down four three-point shots, two by sophomore Mylie Brown, during a 20-0 run that made it a 25-2 game heading into the second quarter.
The Trojans connected on five of their six threes in the first half.
“The first half they hit six threes. We tried to play zone because we are more confident in the zone and obviously we had to switch to man because you hit six threes that is not going to work,” Bloomfield said. “They were more fundamentally sound, more experienced, even if they were young players.”
Beloit scored the first four points of the second period, and led 29-2.
Carlie Carlgren scored on a drive to end a lengthy Concordia scoring drought.
Carlgren scored three of her team-high five points in the quarter.
Beloit took the 38-5 lead into halftime.
The Trojans scored the first three points of the second, but managed just two free throws by freshman Addison Budke over the final 5:12 of the third quarter.
Concordia got a three-point basket by Hanna Acree and buckets by Bartlett and Cianna DeLeon during the stretch to make it a 43-12 game.
With a running clock in the fourth quarter, the Panthers were outscored 6-2.
“I wasn’t disappointed in their play at all because we talked about, especially the first half of the season, it is not about winning or losing. That is not our team goal, because we are inexperienced and we have a lot of fundamental skills and basketball IQ to catch up on,” Bloomfield said. “Some of the errors were to be expected. That is what we are working on in practice.”
Budke led Beloit with 17 points.
Brown scored 10 points for the Trojans.
The Panthers will travel to Belleville for a second straight road game to open the season against Republic County.
