CHS girls tumble to Phillipsburg

PHILLIPSBURG — In the first of two straight games against ranked opponents, the Concordia High School girls' basketball team fell 57-23 to Phillipsburg, ranked eighth in Class 3A, in a road game on Tuesday night.
Concordia (4-14) will host Wamego, ranked fourth in Class 4A, in its final home game of the season on Friday night.
“It is all about competing, regardless of whether they are ranked or not. Are we doing the little things? Are we attacking the basket? Are we working on defense? Are we hustling for loose balls? Doing all of those things fundamentally the best that we can and competing,” Concordia coach Carly Bloomfield said of the tough stretch. “Being able to handle the pressure better so that we can stay in games longer and give us a chance to compete and have an opportunity to maybe get a win in the fourth quarter.”
Taryn Sides, a junior guard who has committed to Kansas State University, scored 40 points to lead Phillipsburg (14-4) to the win over Concordia.
“She is smoothest. She is one of the smoothest players I have seen,” Bloomfield said of Sides. “She is so smart. Her positioning is great. She can shoot a long three. She can drive, she can attack. She doesn't necessarily have weakness. So you can't have mistakes because she will capitalize on them.”
After falling behind 4-0 in the opening minute of the game, Concordia got baskets by Taylor McDaniel and Ashley Bartlett to pull even at 4-4.
Phillipsburg scored the next eight points to go on top to stay, 12-4.
Carlie Carlgren tossed in three straight points and Cianna DeLeon hit a jumper as Concordia closed the gap to 12-9.
Kayla Jacobs made one of two free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give Phillipsburg a 13-9 cushion.
The two teams traded baskets and then Sides scored seven points in less than two minutes to put Phillipsburg up 22-11.
Concordia got two free throws by Hattie Blackwood and a bucket by Bartlett to make it 22-15.
A layup by Jacobs and a tip-in by Sides as time expired in the first half gave Phillipsburg a 26-15 lead.
Sides scored the first four points of the second half.
Concordia answered with baskets by McDaniel and DeLeon, and trailed 30-19.
Phillipsburg then pumped in 14 straight points, 12 by Sides, to open up a 44-19 advantage.
Sides finished with 16 of Phillipsburg's 18 points in the third quarter.
Carlgren scored the final two points of the third period, and Concordia trailed 44-21.
