CHS has Vines place second, Miller finish third at state

SALINA — Led by second-place finisher Daniel Vines, the Concordia High School Panthers had two wrestlers earn a spot on the medals stand at the Class 4A State Championships that wrapped up Saturday at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center.
Vines won his first three matches before suffering a 3-2 defeat to Collin McDaniel, Scott City, in the championship match of the 126-pound class.
Concordia had senior Keyan Miller place third in the 182-pound class.
Concordia had six of the seven wrestlers competing pick up at least one win in the tournament.
The Panthers finished 10th as a team with 56 points.
Tonganoxie won the team title with 126 points. Augusta was second with 127.5 and Andale was third with 111.
“Overall, a great weekend for Panther wrestling. It was our best finish in 15 years,” Concordia coach Josh Brown said.
Vines, a junior, pinned Cooper Anderson, Independence, in 48 seconds in his opening match. He then won a 9-6 decision over Ryan Pankov, Paola, in the quarter finals and defeated Kaven Bartlett, Louisburg, 3-1 in the semifinals.

In the championship match, McDaniel recorded a takedown about a minute in to take a 2-0 lead.
An escape by Vines with 11 seconds remaining in the period made it 2-1.
Vines choose bottom to start the second period. He would get an early escape to tie the score at 2-2. Neither wrestler would score again in the period.
