CHS places third in TMP Invitational

HAYS — Closing out the regular season, the Concordia High School golf team placed third in the Thomas More Prep-Marian Invitational Monday at Smoky Hill Country Club.
Concordia, led by freshman Mya Niehues, posted a team score of 444 and tied for second place with Larned.
Larned was awarded second place based on the tiebreaker of the lowest fifth score.
“Scores were pretty high across the board with only five girls from all teams shooting under 100, but we  were happy to tie for second and ultimately medal third,” Concordia coach Gene Rundus said.
Hoisington won the team title with a 411.
Niehues followed up a 44 on the front nine with a 43 on the back to shoot an 87 and place second individually.
“Mya had another solid day,” Rundus said.
Senior Brecklynn Bonner carded a 118 for Concordia.
Maddie Bowers, a freshman, was one stroke back with a 119 for the Panthers.
Senior Emma Herman rounded out the top four for Concordia with a 120.
Kaitlyn Nelson, a senior, finished with a 137.
“Our scores reflect how challenging the course can be if you don't find the fairway or give yourself any  downhill putts on slick greens,” Rundus said. “Additionally, we played the ball down everywhere, so it really required the girls to muscle up and create a shot or even two if they were in deep rough.”
Amelia Bowles, Atwood, was the individual medalist with an 80.
The Panthers will compete in the Class 4A regional at Wamego Country Club next Friday.
The other teams competing include: Wamego, Buhler, Santa Fe Trail, Clay Center, Eudora, Holton, McPherson, Bishop Miege, Tonganoxie and Topeka Hayden.
