CHS swept by Cowboys

ABILENE — Playing on the road for the final time in the regular season, the Concordia High School baseball team dropped both ends of a North Central Kansas League doubleheader to the Abilene Cowboys on Tuesday.
Abilene held on for a 5-2 win the first game of the twinbill and then scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined to defeat the Panthers, 14-4.
Concordia has suffered seven consecutive losses and is now 2-11 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Panthers begin a six game homestand to finish up the regular season by hosting Minneapolis on Friday.
“We just need to put April behind us and go win some home games,” Concordia coach Brandt Hutchinson said.
Abilene scored a run in the first inning and one in the third to get out to a 2-0 lead in the first game.
Two runs in the fifth inning gave the Cowboys a 4-0 cushion.
Concordia cut the deficit in half with two runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Dalton Owen led off with a single, but was forced out at second on a ground ball by Keegun Beims.
Nathan Brown singled and a triple by Stryker Hake got two runs home.
A pair of strikeouts left Hake stranded at third base.
Abilene answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and led 5-4.
Concordia left a pair of baserunners stranded in the top of the seventh inning.
“We just couldn't get the timely hit,” Hutchinson said. “Maddox (Frey) and Joey (Henderson) did a good job of throwing strikes and allowing our defense to play behind them. It was a well-played ball game and it was fun to watch.”
Frey pitched the first three innings in taking the loss. He gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits, struck out four and walked one.
Henderson allowed three runs, two earned, on two hits, struck out two and walked two.
Concordia scored two runs on seven hits.
Hake drove in two runs.
Scoring two runs in the first inning, Abilene would not trail in the second game.
The Cowboys added two runs in the second inning, one in the third and one in the fourth to go up 6-0.
Shut out through the first four innings, Concordia would make it a 6-4 game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Logan Leiszler got things started with a single.
Henderson and Hake would walk.
Leiszler and Henderson each scored on passed balls.
A ground ball by Owen plated Hake.
Beims and Frey walked with one out.
Shelby Giersch singled to drive in Beims.
Frey was thrown out at home for the third out of the inning.
Abilene extended its lead to 8-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Taking advantage of five walks and a hit batter, the Cowboys pushed six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 14-4 and end the game because of the 10-run rule.
Braeden Primeaux surrendered four runs, two earned, on four hits, struck out one and walked three in two innings in taking the loss.
Giersch, Caleb Hanson and Payton Breese pitched in relief.
Henderson and Beims had two hits each for the Panthers.
