CHS wrestlers win Raider Classic

WAMEGO — Led by four individual champions, the Concordia High School wrestling team won the Raider Classic, hosted by Wamego High School, on Saturday.
Christian Belden, 106 pounds; Daniel Vines, 126 pounds; Nathan Brown, 170 pounds; and Keyan Miller, 195 pounds, placed first in their respective weight classes for Concordia in the season opening event.
The Panthers had eight wrestlers place in the top eight and scored 230 points on its way to capturing the team title.
Abilene finished second with 190 points and Wamego was third with 185.
Belden went 5-0 on his way to placing first. He pinned Drew Schneiwies, Salina Central, in 1:05; pinned Jotham Meyer, Central Heights, in 1:11; pinned Julius Raygoza, Chapman, in 1:41; and pinned Gage Taylor, Abilene, in 54 seconds.
In the championship match, Belden won a 15-3 major decision over Brock Sutton, Ottawa.
Vines posted four consecutive wins in placing first. He pinned Chaz Smith, Chase County, in 52 seconds and won by technical fall, 16-1, over Miguel Hernandez, Alma-Wabaunsee.
Advancing to the championship bracket, Vines pinned Joseph Welsh, Abilene, in the the third period. He then won by technical fall, 18-3, over Colson McIntyre, Herington, in the championship match.
Brown won all five of his matches in the tournament. He pinned Paul Cooper, Chapman, in 41 seconds; pinned Laken Lewis, Mission Valley, in 1:20; and pinned Tristan Randles, Abilene in 1:01.
Moving into the semifinals, Brown pinned Augustus Johns, Chapman, in 51 seconds. He defeated Josh Herrmann, Sabetha, 10-4, in the finals.
Miller picked up four wins on his way to a title. He defeated Wyatt Sink, 6-2; won by injury default over Michael Shipman, Chapman; pinned Jake Meyer, Wamego, in the second period; and pinned Jacob Kuenzi, Sabetha, in the third period.
Ashton Dooley placed second in the 113-pound class for Concordia. He pinned Luke Budke, Chase County, and then lost by fall to Jase Adam, Salina Central.
Logan Leiszler, 120 pounds, finished second for the Panthers. He pinned Colton Ray, Ottawa, in 35 seconds, and won a 4-1 decision over Christopher McClanahan, Abilene, to reach the semifinals.
Leiszler pinned Zack Cunningham, Ottawa. He was then pinned by McClanahan in the championship match.
Tracer Murdock, finished third in the 195-pound class for Concordia. He lost by fall to Hayden Oviatt, Wamego, in the opening round, and then pinned Brayden Meredith, Sabetha, in 1:21 and pinned Tyrus Young, Salina Central, in 1:21.
Moving into the championship bracket, Murdock lost by fall to Jared Ferguson, Ottawa. He pinned Dalton Rokey, Sabetha, in 54 seconds in the third-place match.
Caleb Hanson, 160 pounds, finished fourth for Concordia. He pinned Jack Messersmith, Tonganoxie, in the opening round and then pinned Jacob Havenstein, Wabaunsee, in 31 seconds.
In the quarterfinals, Hanson won a 15-8 decision over Mason Eickman. He lost by fall to Drew Brown, Wamego, and then lost a 13-2 major decision to Nick Anderson, Chapman, in the third-place match.
Easton Swihart won four of his five matches on his way to placing fifth in the 138-pound class for Concordia. He pinned Aiden Rowley, Chapman, in 1:59 and then pinned Calvin Magette, Wabaunsee, in 17 seconds.
Grady Sumrall, Ottawa, defeated Swihart, 13-3, in the quarterfinals.
Swihart pinned teammate Dustin Sterrett in 31 seconds and won a 10-5 decision over Sameron Svitak, Herington, in the fifth-place match.
Toby Wahlmeier, 152 pounds, posted two wins on his way to placing sixth in the tournament.
Braxton Kindel, 132 pounds, also finished sixth.
Eickman, Drew Sterrett, 132 pounds; and Jace Tholstrup, 285 pounds, won two matches each and finished seventh in their respective weight classes.
Dustin Sterrett, 138 pounds, and Colby Trost, 145 pounds, placed seventh.
The Concordia junior varsity had three wrestlers place first in the Salina South Invitational on Saturday.
Keigan Workman went 5-0 with four pins in placing first in the 106B division.
Carter Eakins, 120 pounds, won four straight matches by pin and placed first.
Bergun Kindel was first in the 145A division. He won all five matches by pin.
Concordia had Jadrian Riley go 2-1 and place second in the 195-pound class.
