Concordia’s Vines, Tyler place fifth at state

SALINA — Concordia High School seniors Daniel Vines and Koby Tyler recorded fifth-place finishes in the Class 4A state tournament that finished up Saturday at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center.
Vines, who placed second in the state tournament in the 126-pound class last year, finished fifth in the 132-pound class.
Tyler, making his first appearance at state, was fifth in the 120-pound class.
Concordia, with six wrestlers competing, finished 19th as a team with 29.5 points.
Andale won the team title with 163 points. Rose Hill was second with 146.5 and Augusta was third with 127.
Vines, who finished the season 41-7, won a 10-7 decision over Hagen Blanck, Paola, in the opening round of the tournament. He defeated Jaxsen Salinas, Ulysses, 5-2 in the quarterfinals.
Kohen Wright, Independence, dealt Vines a 5-2 defeat in the semifinals.
Wright lost 11-4 to Braeden Moore, Tonganoxie, in the championship match.
Vines suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Kalvin LaPlant, Augusta, in the consolation semifinals. He then won 3-1, in sudden victory, over Gregery Martinez, Holcomb, in the fifth-place match.
Tyler won an 11-0 major decision over Roman Romero, Ulysses, in the first round. He then defeated Lucas Batz, Holton, by technical fall, 15-0, in the quarterfinals.
Owen Suttles, Winfield, pulled out a 5-4 win over Tyler in the semifinals.
Julio Aguirre, Rose Hill, defeated Suttles 5-1 in the finals.
Kaiden Powell, Paola, won a 7-5 decision over Tyler in the consolation semifinals.
Tyler, who was 37-5 on the season, faced Batz in a rematch in the fifth-place match, and won a 10-0 major decision.
Junior Christian Belden, making his second straight trip to state, picked up two wins for Concordia.
Belden (26-7) lost a 6-3 decision to Koehn Dietrich, Mulvane, in his first match. He pinned Peyton Rivera, Royal Valley, in 3:30 and then defeated Kyle Sloan, Frontenac, 9-6.
Mason Gibbons, Independence, pinned Belden and went on to place fourth.
Sophomore Caleb Hanson, 175 pounds, making his first appearance at state for Concordia, pinned Ashton Moore, Louisburg, in 4:48 in the opening round. He then lost a 4-1 decision to Kody Brenn, Winfield, in the quarterfinals.
Brenn advanced to the finals and won 3-0 over Isaiah Wilson, Winfield.
Hanson (30-12) lost a 4-1 decision to David Signs, Wellington, in the consolation bracket.
Concordia also had senior Michael Ashland, 285 pounds, and sophomore Tracer Murdock, 190 pounds, competing in the state tournament for the first time.
Ashland (22-16) lost by fall to third-place finisher, Milan Colvin, Rose Hill, and then lost by fall to Hunter Diederich, Topeka Hayden.
Murdock (26-15) was beaten 6-2 by Seth Ferguson, Ottawa, in the opening round.
Ferguson would go on to place second.
Collin Scott, El Dorado, won a 5-1 decision over Murdock.
