Donovan wins regional title, Panthers qualify for state

HOLTON — Led by individual champion Abby Donovan, the Concordia High School girls' golf team placed third in the Class 4A regional tournament at Holton Country Club on Monday and earned a trip to state.
Following up a 41 on the front nine with a 42 on the back, Donovan carded an 83 and finished in a tie for first place in the tournament with Ashten Pierson, Wamego.
Donovan, a senior who will be making her fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament, defeated Pierson in a playoff to claim medalist honors.
Concordia shot 421 as a team to place third in the regional tournament, one stroke ahead of Ottawa, and qualify for state.
The state tournament will be played next Monday and Tuesday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
Wamego won the team title with a score of 389. Topeka Hayden finished third with a 401.
Concordia senior Haley Lewis turned rounds of 50-54 to shoot a 104 and finish 12th individually.
Senior Shea Trecek and junior McKenzie Widen each shot 117 for the Panthers to round out the top four.
Junior Bethany Trost shot a 141 for Concordia.
The Panthers advanced to state for the third consecutive season.
