KCK takes two from T-Birds

KANSAS CITY — Scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, 16th-ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College would pull out a 3-2 victory over the Cloud County Community College Thunderbirds in the opening game of a Jayhawk Conference Division II doubleheader on Thursday.
The Blue Devils would put up eight runs in the first inning to knock off Cloud County 13-5 in the second game.
Cloud County, 16-24 overall and 5-16 in the conference, was locked in a scoreless tie with KCK through three innings in game one.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Cloud County answered with two runs in the top of the fifth, and led 2-1.
Mia Kelly and Ella Caudill each scored on a single by Delaney Exon.
The Thunderbirds would go scoreless over the final two innings.
Two runs on two hits, a walk and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Blue Devils the one-run win.
Taylor Dekok pitched all seven innings in taking the loss. She gave up three runs, two earned, on just three hits, struck out two and walked eight.
The T-Birds scored two runs on six hits.
KCK put up eight runs on eight hits and an error in the bottom of the first inning in game two.
It was still an 8-0 game when Cloud County scored three runs in the top of the third inning.
McKenna Mayhew singled home Ryleigh Jones and Shayna Fila and scored on a base hit by Rae Ann Hartwig.
A run in the bottom of the inning gave KCK a 9-3 advantage.
The Blue Devils made it 11-3 with two runs in the fourth inning.
Hartwig and Grace Utz singled home runs in the top of the fifth inning, and the T-Birds trailed 11-5.
KCK responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game because of the eight-run rule.
Kyra Meyer took the loss. She surrendered 13 runs, 12 earned, on 16 hits, struck out one and walked three.
Hartwig was 3-for-3 at the plate for the T-Birds with two runs batted in.
Jones had three hits in three at bats and scored two runs.
Mayhew knocked in two runs.
