Niehues records ace, places seventh

HESSTON — Sparked by a hole in one on her fourth hole of the day, Concordia High School freshman Mya Niehues placed seventh individually in the Buhler High School Invitational golf tournament played Friday at Hesston Golf Course.
Niehues, who started her round on number 10, recorded a hole in one with a nine iron on the 132-yard 13th hole. She shot 41 on her first nine holes and followed that up with a 41 on the second nine to finish  with an 82.
“Individually, the day was capped off by Mya Niehues who hit a hole in one on number 13 and medaled seventh out of a field of 98 total golfers. We were all super excited for her,” Concordia coach Gene Rundus said.
Concordia finished 15th as a team with a score of 423.
Maize won the team title with a 325. Hays was second with a 343 and Wellington was third with a 353.
“The girls always love this tournament because they get to ride in carts with a teammate for the entire 18-hole event,” Rundus said. “The course was challenging for us as we played the ball down for the first time this year. We also found several grassy penalty areas and ended up behind many trees on the front nine. Through it all the girls kept each other's enthusiasm up and forged ahead.”
Sophomore Anna Widen carded a 102 for Concordia.
Senior Brecklynn Bonner shot a 117 for the Panthers and senior Emma Herman rounded out the top four with a 122.
Senior Kaitlynn Nelson shot 123 and freshman Maddie Bowers finished with a 127.
Kinslea Jones, a junior from Maize, fired a six-under par 65 to earn medalist honors.
