Niehues records second-place finish

CLAY CENTER — Posting her best nine-hole score of the season, Concordia High School freshman Mya Niehues placed second in the Clay Center Invitational golf tournament Thursday at Clay Center Country Club.
Niehues fired a round of 39 and finished in a tie for second with Lillian Costa, Wamego.
With a par on the ninth hole, Niehues won the scorecard playoff over Costa for second place.
“Mya looked good today. She had a chip-in birdie on seven and a great putt on nine to save par, which was the hole that broke a tie for second place,” Concordia coach Gene Rundus said. “It was definitely fun to watch her, as she keeps making shots and improving as we enter the home stretch.”
Concordia finished fifth as a team with a score of 211.
Wamego won the team title with a 165. Manhattan was second with a 175 and Marysville was third with a 193.
Concordia had junior Anna Widen shoot a 54.
Freshman Maddie Bowers and senior Emma Herman each shot 59 for the Panthers.
Senior Kaitlyn Nelson shot a 63 for Concordia. Senior Brecklynn Bonner finished with a 65.
“The girls managed the course pretty well throughout their rounds. However, we were forced to take shots that got us out of trouble far too often. We will look forward to reducing our mishits when the team heads to Hays on Monday,” Rundus said.
Addison Douglass, Wamego, shot a one-under-par 33 to earn medalist honors.
