Panther girls tumble to Marysville

MARYSVILLE — A short-handed Concordia High School girls' basketball team dropped its North Central Kansas League opener to Marysville, 50-39, on Tuesday night.
Concordia, playing without leading scorer Carlie Carlgren because of an injury and reserve guard Erinae Flesher because of illness, fell behind late in the first quarter and was never able to overtake Marysville.
“There were two girls out, one injured, one sick. So there were girls having to play more minutes than what they are used to. You could tell they were gassed at the end there. But I thought we still played hard. The score doesn't always reflect how well the girls are actually playing,” Concordia coach Trey Kuhlman said.
Concordia, now 0-4 overall, led 7-5 when Cianna DeLeon completed a three-point play five minutes into the game.
Marysville, 1-3 overall and 1-1 in North Central Kansas League play, scored the final four points of the first quarter and the first point of the second to go on top to stay, 11-7.
A jumper by DeLeon would pull Concordia within two points, 11-9.
The Panthers would then score just two points over the next four-plus minutes.
Marysville tossed in seven points during that stretch, and led 18-11.
Two free throws by Riley Jessup left Concordia trailing 18-13 at halftime.
The Bulldogs tossed in the first two points of the second half, but Concordia scored the next four to close the gap to 20-17.
Consecutive baskets by Lindsay Dressman started an 8-1 spurt to push Marysville's lead to 28-18.
Charlize Cash scored for Concordia, but the Bulldogs answered with a three-point basket by Bella Rader to make it a 31-20 game.
Marysville would lead by as many as 13 points in the third quarter, and was up 37-25 heading into the final period.
“I should have switched defenses up and made them beat us outside. It was a coaching mistake. I will learn,” Kuhlman said.
Concordia was unable to get any closer than 10 points over the final eight minutes of play.
Cash scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the way for the Panthers. She also had three assists.
DeLeon and Taylor McDaniel scored six points each for Concordia.
Hailey Ingalls led Marysville with 17 points. Dressman added 12 points.
Concordia, after playing three straight road games, will return home to host Abilene in a league matchup on Friday night.
