Panthers place third in quad

CLAY CENTER — Joshua Wood placed first in number one singles to lead the Concordia High School tennis team to a third-place finish in the quadrangular hosted by Clay Center on Monday.
Wood opened with an 8-2 win over Eli Spooner, Smoky Valley. He suffered a narrow 9-7 loss to Layton Wyatt, Phillipsburg, and then rolled to an 8-6 win over Brody Kramer, Clay Center.
There was a three-way tie for first place, and Wood won the tiebreaker.
Concordia scored 12 points in the meet.
Clay Center won the meet with 23 points and Phillipsburg was third with 20.
Bricen Benyshek placed second in number two singles for Concordia. He lost 8-6 to Tavien Carter, Smoky Valley, and then knocked off Nathan Fischer, Phillipsburg, 8-2 and Tanner Pfizenmaier, Clay Center, 8-2.
Isaiah Steffen and Malachi Carder, playing number one doubles for Concordia, fell 8-2 to Isaac Ayala and Sawyer Lysell-Alkire, Smoky Valley; 8-2 to Brock Buresh and Eric Moon, Phillipsburg; and 8-4 to Brock Ferguson and Taige Pfizenmaier, Clay Center.
In number two singles, Concordia's Brett Rosenbaum and Andrew Henderson defeated Aaron Elvin-Temple and Jordan Bodenhamer, Smoky Valley. They were beaten 8-7 by Jeremy Ford and Carter Kendall, Phillipsburg, and 8-1 by Brody Rosenow and Brooks Craig, Clay Center.
